Walrus Audio are a company that takes pedal-building seriously. Not only do their pedals provide you with great sounds, but they feature amazing artwork to inspire you and add life to your pedalboard.
Their Warhorn Mid-Range Overdrive pedal offers you a transparent overdrive sound with a wide range of gain. A compression switch allows you to further refine your sound to find the perfect tone.
“Transparent” is a word that is often associated with overdrive pedals. It derives from that highly sought after Gold pedal (named after a mythical beast), where the added dirt wouldn’t change the character of your unaffected tone but rather added to it.
The Warhorn emulates that famous design closely, but has a bit more grunt and flexibility. With the Gain control set low and the Level high, you can boost your sound for a sweet and musical low gain push. Increase the gain and you can achieve some soaring Texas-flavoured lead tones – think SRV or Hendrix.
Unlike many OD-style pedals that typically feature a single ‘Tone’ control, the Warhorn has two EQ knobs to let you sculpt your overdrive sound however you like.
The Bass control can let you cut or boost the low-end, so if you want to add some punch to your riffs or get some creamy lead sounds, simply crank this useful control.
Use the Treble knob to add clarity and presence. Set it low for a smoother and less-piercing high-end, or turn it past 12 o’clock to let your solos really cut through the mix, whether onstage or in the studio.
The Warhorn also features a toggle-switch that allows you to control the sound of the overdrive even more. In the up position, more compression is added to achieve a more American-style tone. This is also great for playing leads, if you want a more consistent and precise tone. Flick the switch to the down position for a more open and British-voiced overdrive, that responds better to dynamics and your pick attack.
Here’s what Walrus Audio say about the Warhorn Mid-range Overdrive:
The Warhorn is a mid-range, transparent overdrive pedal that’s capable of punchy rhythm, to searing Texas Blues leads. For added versatility, the pedal features a toggle switch that provides two flavors of clipping. The up position is a more compressed, symmetrically clipped tone, and the down position is an asymmetric, more open and organic sound. It includes Level, Drive, Bass and Treble controls providing a large range of tweaking and shaping options for your original tone.
The Warhorn comes in “prismatic gold” enclosure with white, cream and black ink. Artwork features a warrior at the front lines brandishing an intricate battle horn leading his army in a victorious battle.
