The Jackson Audio Belle Starr is the signature overdrive pedal of Switchfoot guitarist Drew Shirley. Drew is known for cranking low-wattage amps to achieve his overdriven sound and the Belle Starr recreates that sound in a pedal.
Organic Sounding Overdrive
The Belle Starr is a low to medium gain overdrive pedal that’s designed recreate the organic sound of an amplifier being pushed into natural overdrive. Jackson Audio have achieved this with a unique clipping circuit and MOSFET transistors and the result is a warm, amp-like overdrive that’s suitable for blues, rock and really any application outside of high-gain genres. The Belle Starr operates on 9-18V power with 18V operation increasing the headroom.
This pedal features a straight-forward four control layout. The Gain control, of course, adjusts the gain level which is evenly distributed across the control to smoothly take you from no gain through to medium gain. The Body control controls the amount of low-end giving you +/-15 dB for boosting or cutting the bass frequencies. There’s also a Tone control which lets you adjust the treble frequencies. Finally, there’s a volume knob for controlling how loud you want your overdrive to be.
