Product Description

Classic design, contemporary features. The Les Paul Modern brings legendary design into the 21st century. Epiphone’s Inspired by Gibson range takes advanced construction techniques and elite electronics and applies them to accessible instruments.

Construction

Everyone knows the original Les Paul is a hefty beast. Epiphone are applying Ultra Modern chambering to the mahogany body in order to relieve your shoulders of some of the burden - without affecting tone. Topped with a maple cap to lay down the cool sparkle paint job, the Les Paul Modern is a different animal to what we’ve seen in the past from Epiphone.

The asymmetrical neck shape and ebony fingerboard are more welcome additions in enhancing playability and fretting hand comfort. In the hardware department, the Modern is equipped with a Graptech NuBone nut and LockTone ABR bridge to enforce super tight tuning stability.

Sound

The Les Paul Modern houses ProBucker-2 and 3 humbuckers modelled after their Gibson-made counterparts. They’re inspired by the original PAF pickups and are characterised by the alnico vintage output and sweet sustain.

The bridge ProBucker-3 is slightly overwound for extra attack and sounds great through high gain, while the neck pickup takes a softer touch. Both are coil split to create dynamic single coil tones in an instant.

Rightly or wrongly, my initial reaction was, 'I love that colour. It will be mine.' And so it was. I took a bit of a gamble with this guitar having not been able to try it. My main instrument is a Jackson SDX, which I love, but fancied something without a Floyd stuffed on it and was drawn toward the Epiphone Les Paul Modern. Firstly, the colour. I love it. It's not everybody's choice of finish but it reminded me of a bicycle I had in my younger years that I'd sprayed a metallic blue. Secondly, the classic shape, I thought (and was right) would look great in my music room alongside a couple of amps, keyboard and various plastic fork figures created by the Grandkids. Out of the box everything looked in good fettle with no chips, dings or scratches and after a quick tune up, it was evident that it required no setup. No fret rattle, buzzing or otherwise was noted. The strings that it came with were '10's'. I'm used to playing a thinner string but these sounded good and I'm sure I'll get the hang of needing more force to bend them to pitch without wincing. 😉 The coil splits give a great range of tones and variations and because I now have a guitar with additional volume controls, I can at last perform The Rhandy Rhoads 'switch flip' for no real reason, other than I can. I haven't restrung the guitar yet so can't comment on the Grover locking tuners but I see no reason why they shouldn't do the intended job. The only minor (very, very minor) issue I have with the Epiphone, is the glossed neck. I just prefer a satin neck. Just a preference and I'm sure It won't be too much of a hindrance.
