Short History of Universal Audio
Universal Audio was founded in 1958 by Bill Putnam Sr., the favourite engineer of big names like Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Ray Charles and many more. Not only that, he was a passionate innovator and is responsible for many studio and equipment designs we now take for granted.
Among his great list of achievements, Putnam was the inventor of the modern recording console, the Multi-band audio equaliser, the vocal booth and the first engineer to use artificial reverberation in commercial recording.
In 1999, Universal Audio was Re-founded by Bill’s sons, with 2 main goals: to faithfully reproduce classic analog recording equipment in the tradition of their father; and to design new digital recording tools in with the sound and spirit of vintage analog technology.
Since then they have built a range of hugely successful audio interfaces, a library of authentic software recreations of vintage hardware and powerful DSP hardware.
It’s from these illustrious beginnings that Universal Audio are perfectly placed to not only recreate the revered tools of the past, but to also create the classic gear of the future.
