We’ve teamed up with our friends at Chicago Music Exchange to bring you two Epiphone Inspired by Gibson Custom 1960 Les Paul Special Double Cut Reissue guitars, featuring some rad specs and exclusive finishes. Available in Oxblood and Olive Drab, these models come loaded with specially‑modded Gibson USA P‑90 Soapbar pickups for punchy, vintage‑inspired tone — all while paying homage to a pivotal, transitional moment in Gibson’s history.
A brief history lesson
By the late ‘50s, Gibson found itself up against a changing market. A competitor was winning over the new wave of rock ’n’ roll players with its thinner, more contoured design, so Gibson began rethinking the Les Paul’s look. Before the full leap to what we now know as the SG, the Les Paul Special and Junior were used to trial a double‑cutaway body between 1958 and 1960.
The 1960 Les Paul Special is widely regarded as the sweet spot. With the neck pickup nudged a little closer to the bridge and a slimmer, faster neck profile, it delivered a snappier sound and improved playability. This final year of the double‑cut LP Special remains a firm fave, and this Inspired by Gibson Custom reissue captures the spirit of those guitars — without the vintage price tag or Gibson Custom Shop cost!
Custom Gibson USA P-90 Soapbar pickups
To give this 1960 Les Paul Special Double Cut Reissue a little extra edge, CME worked with Gibson USA to spec custom, slightly underwound P‑90 Soapbar pickups for this model. The result? A more refined EQ with a brighter top end, awesome note definition and that unmistakable P‑90 bite. In other words, it’s ready to rock straight out of the included hardshell case.
What’s more, you’ll also find CTS pots, a Switchcraft jack and toggle switch, plus Luxe Bumblebee capacitors — premium components usually reserved for Gibson Custom Shop guitars only. The payoff is enhanced tone, rock‑solid reliability and a guitar that’s built to handle the stage.
