Product Description

Relab Development Color Drive is a next-generation saturation plug-in that recreates the complete tube gain stage of the Relab 176 compressor, transformers and all. Instead of stacking algorithms or faking warmth, it solves the entire analogue circuit in real time, delivering harmonics, weight and transient control that feel as alive and responsive as real hardware.

At its core, Color Drive is a fully modelled 6BC8 variable-gain tube stage with input and output transformers, calibration bias and modern tone-shaping controls. This lets you move from barely-there thickness to rich tube crunch while keeping your low end intact and your transients musical. Whether you are mixing drums, vocals, guitars or the full mix bus, Color Drive gives you the kind of subtle, interactive saturation that is usually only possible with premium outboard gear.

Because the whole circuit is solved as a single system, every control affects how the others respond. Drive, transformer coupling and calibration bias all interact to shape the harmonic profile, transient behaviour and perceived loudness of your signal. Add in flexible filtering and crossover options and you get a plug-in that can be as transparent or as colourful as you need, without ever sounding static or artificial.

With native Apple Silicon support, efficient real-time processing and authorisation via iLok account, Color Drive slots easily into modern Mac and Windows studios. It is ideal for producers, mix engineers and sound designers who want authentic analogue-style saturation inside the DAW, with the precision and recall of software.

Real-Time Analogue Circuit Modelling

Color Drive is built around the full variable-gain tube stage of the Relab 176, including input transformer, 6BC8 tube, calibration bias and output transformer. Because the entire circuit is solved in real time, harmonics, density and transient shape all interact exactly as they would in hardware, giving you a living, breathing response rather than a static effect.

Musical Saturation from Subtle to Bold

From gentle harmonic enhancement to pronounced tube crunch, Color Drive can tuck transients, add weight and bring sources forward in a mix without simply making them louder. It excels on drums, vocals, bass, guitars and mix buses when you want presence and character that stays controlled and musical at any drive level.

Transformer and Bias Control for Tailored Harmonics

The switchable transformer coupling and Calibration control let you tune the harmonic balance with precision. Engage the output transformer for focused, punchy odd-order harmonics, then adjust Calibration to bias the tube and introduce just the right amount of even-order warmth. Together they give you detailed control over how the colour sits in your track.

Modern Tone Shaping Around the Tube Stage

Smart filtering and crossover options shape what the circuit hears, not just how much it is driven. A low-end crossover can route deep bass around the drive stage to keep the bottom end solid and clean, while pre and post tilt or high-shelf emphasis filters let you decide exactly which frequencies push the tube harder, sculpting the harmonic profile before any Drive is added.

Features
  • Authentic Variable-Gain Tube Circuit - Based on the Relab 176’s 6BC8 tube stage with input and output transformers, Color Drive behaves like a real analogue unit. Harmonics, saturation and transient rounding develop naturally, giving you the organic feel and responsiveness of hardware inside your DAW.
  • Switchable Transformer Coupling - Engage transformer coupling to insert the modelled output transformer into the signal path, completing the full analogue chain. With Calibration centred, this produces predominantly odd-order harmonics that add punch, focus and mix-ready solidity without harshness.
  • Calibration Bias for Harmonic Tuning - The Calibration control adjusts the tube’s bias point, letting you dial in extra even-order harmonics when you want warmth, thickness or contour. Combined with the transformer stage, it becomes a powerful way to fine-tune the harmonic blend for each source.
  • Advanced Frequency-Selective Drive - A low-end crossover and flexible pre/post emphasis filters let you decide which parts of the spectrum hit the tube hardest. Keep sub-bass clean while saturating mids, or push the top end for airy excitement, all while maintaining clarity and low-end definition.
