Product Description

The Kobol Expander from Behringer is a 2 voice fully analogue synthesizer. What makes this synth unique is the VCO waveforms can morph between all wave shapes found in the 2 analogue oscillators. Inspired by the sound of the 70’s, notable uses of similar synths from this period are, Vince Clarke, Vangelis, Jean-Michel Jarre, Depeche Mode, Peter Gabriel and Hans Zimmer.

Whilst being monophonic, The Kobol Expander does contain the ability to Poly Chain up to 16 Voices, you could get 3 of these to create your own 3 voice analogue synth, however you could also use other Poly Chain compatible devices to create your own unique analogue poly synth.

Key Features:

  • 32 CV Patch Points:
The Kobol Expander has 32 patch points ready to go, incorporate your Eurorack instruments and CV capable equipment. CV allows you to expand and even combine units together, for example the Behringer Neutron can be expanded with the Kobol Expander. The unit is also in a Eurorack friendly form factor along with a lot of Behringer’s other equipment.
  • Sweepable waveshapes:
The waveshapes can be swept (morphed) between the different waves. A lot of other synths allow you to select different waveshapes via a selection. The Kobol Expander allows you to morph between them, giving you the ability to have total freedom and fall upon new waveforms, total sonic freedom.
  • External Audio processing:
The Audio input allows you to route audio through the units circuity. Allowing you to add the Kobol’s analogue saturation to beef up another synth, or even add some dirt and grit to a drum beat.

I purchased this synth as it is quite a different sound format to a lot of others and, being Behringer, cheap enough to take a punt on. I have several of the synths in the Behringer euro rack sized boxes and this must be One of the nicest to use, worth having shorter cables for the patch points below the knobs though or they get in the way! The only thing I feel this synth is missing is an attenuator when patching but is is compatible with several other synths -the Mavis is the one I've used - so this can be sorted. The most important thing is that the Kobol sounds good, quite often distinctive to these ears so it has joined my small group of favourite synths.
