Product Description
The Mapex Black Panther Versatus 14 x 4.58 Russ Miller signature snare is a compact, ultra-responsive workhorse designed to sit perfectly in any mix. With its hybrid maple and mahogany shell, reinforced batter edge and premium Black Panther hardware, it delivers articulate, controlled tones that can move seamlessly from studio precision to live punch, all wrapped in a stunning SAS2 Peach Burl Burst finish.
Co-designed with legendary session drummer Russ Miller, the Versatus is built to handle the demands of top-level recording and touring. The unique shell construction and internal reinforcement ring focus the sound for powerful rimshots, tight ghost notes and a remarkably wide tuning range, giving you a single snare that can cover countless musical situations.
Part of the elite Black Panther series, this drum benefits from Mapex innovations such as SONIClear bearing edges, Sonic Saver hoops and the cylinder-drive strainer. Every component is chosen to maximise tone, feel and reliability, so your playing translates with clarity and character in any setting.
Designed with Russ Miller
Russ Miller has played with over 50 international artists and on countless film and TV sessions, so his signature snare had to be versatile, reliable and mix-ready. The Versatus reflects his exacting standards, providing a refined, controlled sound that engineers love and players can trust night after night.
Hybrid Shell with Reinforcement Ring
The 7-ply, 8.5 mm maple and mahogany shell is paired with a 4-ply maple reinforcement ring under the batter head, creating an 11-ply strike point. This boosts projection and rimshot crack while naturally drying excess overtones, so you get punchy backbeats and clean articulation without fighting unwanted ring.
Black Panther SONIClear and Sonic Saver Hardware
Mapex SONIClear bearing edges improve head-to-shell contact for easier tuning and enhanced resonance, while Sonic Saver hoops focus the tone and protect your sticks. The result is a snare that tunes quickly, responds effortlessly and delivers a consistent, musical voice across all dynamics.
Premium Strainer, Vents and Components
The cylinder-drive strainer uses a self-lubricating bearing for smooth, precise tension adjustments, helping you dial in the exact snare response you need. Additional venting subtly dries the sound and changes the feel under the stick, and with Puresound 16-strand wires and Remo heads fitted, the Versatus is ready to perform straight away.
Features
- Hybrid Maple and Mahogany Shell - The 7-ply, 8.5 mm shell blends maple clarity with mahogany warmth, giving you a versatile, musical tone that works across genres. It delivers a full-bodied voice with focused lows and a smooth top end that records beautifully.
- Maple Reinforcement Ring for Focused Projection - A 4-ply maple reinforcement ring at the batter side creates an 11-ply strike zone, enhancing rimshot power and tightening up overtones. This means cutting backbeats and articulate ghost notes that sit perfectly in the mix without excessive ringing.
- SONIClear Bearing Edges and Sonic Saver Hoops - SONIClear edges ensure better head contact for improved resonance and easier tuning, while Sonic Saver hoops add focus and sensitivity. Together they provide a responsive feel, extended tuning range and reduced stick wear.
- Cylinder-Drive Strainer with Puresound Wires - The advanced cylinder-drive strainer offers smooth, accurate tension control, so you can fine-tune snare response quickly. Paired with Puresound 16-strand Custom Series wires, it delivers crisp, controlled snare articulation at every dynamic level.
