The DiMarzio Gravity Storm neck pickup has been designed alongside Steve Vai to give him a different sound from his DiMarzio Evolution set up but still with the same ability to cut through the mix and support his unique playing style. They lowered the output in comparison to the Evolution but have altered the mid and high response to give you a warm sound with a mid boost that works great for guitar solos especially when it reaches the higher frets.
This is the F Spaced version of the Gravity Storm neck pickup, designed for guitars with tremolo systems.
Single Coil and Humbucker Mix
One of the things Steve Vai needs out of his guitars is great harmonic response which is normally not found on warm humbucking pickups. The team at DiMarzio have worked their magic and they have managed to work that harmonic response into a warm humbucker by trying to mix in the general tone of a single coil. By using a ceramic magnet instead of an alnico and having a fairly flat response across the entire instrument they have made a pickup that sounds great for Steve's signature solo style but also cleans up nicely to produce warm clean tones.
Here's what DiMarzio say about the Gravity Storm F Spaced Neck Pickup in Green
Most neck humbuckers don't do a great job at reproducing pick harmonics, especially if they have a warm sound. This one's different, particularly with 24-fret guitars. The combination of fat neck position tone with harmonics is something we haven't often encountered before. It has a throaty quality that sounds like a cross between a humbucker and a single-coil.
