Epiphone has teamed up with Gibson’s Custom Shop division once again to bring back an absolute icon. The Inspired by Gibson Custom 1963 Firebird I Reissue is a loving nod to the original designed by legendary automotive stylist Ray Dietrich back in 1963. It was a forward-thinking guitar for its time, introducing Gibson’s first-ever neck-through-body design. Unsurprisingly, it found its way into the hands of some proper legends, from Johnny Winter to Keith Richards and Eric Clapton. And now, you can follow in their footsteps.
Classic construction with premium upgrades
This latest reissue keeps those unmistakable Firebird details alive but makes them more accessible than ever, now featuring a lovely Rosewood fingerboard. At its core is a 9-ply neck-through-body build made from Mahogany and Walnut, with solid Mahogany wings for excellent resonance and sustain. You’ve got 22 medium jumbo frets and clean, understated mother-of-pearl dot inlays. While up top, Kluson planetary geared “banjo” tuners and a Graph Tech nut keep things running smooth and stable.
Vintage feel, rock-solid performance
The Lightning Bar Wraparound bridge delivers solid performance, great sustain and precise intonation. It’s simple, effective and totally in keeping with the stripped-back ethos of the original Firebird I. It responds beautifully whether you’re digging in or taking it easy.
Gibson USA Firebird mini humbucker
Electronics-wise, it’s all about keeping things true to the minimalist spirit of the OG. You’re getting a full-fat Gibson USA Firebird mini humbucker loaded with Alnico 5 magnets, so it sounds crisp, punchy and full of character. Controls are classic CTS, handling master volume and tone duties, alongside a Black Beauty paper-in-oil capacitor for that vintage sweetness. Round it all off with a Switchcraft jack, and you’ve got a guitar that’s built to last the distance and sound great right out of the included hardshell case.
