Danelectro burst back onto the scene in 1998 with a brilliant run of reissues, lovingly reviving their quirky golden-era guitars. Fast forward to today, and things have only got better. Rather than simply recreating the past, Danelectro have turned things up a notch — doubling down on everything that made those originals so special. The Big Sitar is a faithful reissue of the cult-fave original that rocked up in the ‘60s, complete with the same otherworldly looks and unmistakable sound that psychedelic pioneers couldn’t get enough of.
Big vibes, proper hollowbody feel
The Big Sitar’s full-hollow body is key to its unique sound. Built from composite Plywood, it delivers a lively, open resonance that really brings out both the buzzing bridge and the sympathetic harp strings. You get loads of airy sustain and a natural bloom, especially when you start blending guitar lines with droning textures.
Proper sitar buzz
At the heart of the sound is the Gotoh electric sitar bridge, designed to nail that classic buzzing, metallic shimmer. As the strings pass over its curved surface, you get a compressed, textured response that reacts beautifully to your playing. Light touch or heavy attack — it all changes the amount of buzz and sustain, making it seriously expressive.
Triple threat of lipstick pickups
With three Lipstick pickups (bridge, neck and harp section), there’s loads of tonal ground to cover. Each has its own volume and tone controls, so you can dial in exactly how much normal guitar tone or sympathetic drone you want. From subtle ambience to full-on psychedelic swirl, it’s all there.
Familiar feel, proper left-field sound
Despite the far-out tones, the Danelectro Large Sitar feels reassuringly normal thanks to a bolt-on Maple neck, comfy “C” carve and a 24.75" scale. The Pau Ferro board keeps things smooth across all 21 frets, and the graphite nut helps keep tuning stable. In short: it’s easy to pick up, but anything but ordinary once you start playing!
