Mr Rick Jones6th Jul 2022

I am a semi-pro musician and make my living almost entirely via gigging for one part of the year during the local tourist season where I live. I have been running a Sunrise magnetic pickup in tandem with a K&K transducer on a second jack (two holes in the tailblocks of my guitars) for about 12 years. It sounds huge, great for solo gigs, but you need to carry preamps or DI's as both of those pickups are passive. When I recently got a third fine Avalon Irish-made guitar, I didn't want to drill the end-block, and because Fishman's Powertap Earth system is set up to either sum the two pickups to mono down a standard cable, or split via a Y breakout lead (supplied), plus it is active, it seemed to be an ideal 'grab and go' for doing sessions, quick gigs and open mics and not having to carry outboard gear. It arrived quickly and was easy to install, and having used it out live a few times now, I am totally happy with it. The Rare Earth humbucker, being smaller footprint and lighter weight, also affects the unplugged sound of the guitar way less than my Sunrise soundhole magnetics, the Headway SAM-1 (which is itself a very good pickup) or the Baggs M1 and M80 pickups –– all of which dampen the guitar acoustically but I have been willing to overlook in the past top use them. Now I don't have to. An added, unexpected bonus is that when split to stereo, you can still blend in some of the TAP sensor on the magnetic channel –– which can be eq'd totally differently that the TAP sensor's own channel –– this makes it more versatile even than a typical dual source setup and is almost like having three pickups in your guitar. I will be replacing the dual source setups I've been using in all three of my other gigging guitars.
