Product Description

The Zoom R24 Portable Recorder is a swiss army knife of functionality. Also acting as an Audio Interface and Midi Controller it takes the popular R16 Portable Multitrack and expands the concept to a new level allowing you to record (you guessed it!) up to 24 tracks (up to 8 simultaneously) all onto a handy SD Card for easy editing. Perfect for making demos, live recordings or full productions - even when you're away from your studio.

What's more, the R24 functions as an audio interface to your computer and as a control surface that works with all the major software packages. Now you have an all-in-one portable studio that also functions as the front end to your home studio and as a mixer so you can enjoy the benefits of tactile mixing as opposed to mixing with your mouse.

The R24 is part of a new generation of products that bundle everything you need to make great recordings any time, wherever you are, and without worrying about losing inspiration because of awkward and fiddly operation. The R24 is a breeze to operate and you'll be recording in no time, right out of the box!

Very useful tool. As a beginner I found the manual truly appalling because I didn't understand many of the words. But basic recordings and multitracking with effects works well and allows me to do what I want. Having 24 tracks and 8 simultaneous inputs is currently overkill for my applications, but you never know when it might come in handy.

I rated the R24 with 4 stars not because it's a bad piece of kit - in fact it's extraordinarily powerful for the money - but because I think it's trying too hard to be a jack of all trades and is therefore a bit more complex than it needs to be. I wanted a home recorder, plain and simple. I've had a Zoom MRS-1266 for years. The 1266 is a fabulous little machine, beautifully laid out. Just about everything you need is there at the touch of a good-sized button. On the R24 the buttons are much smaller, the displays ridiculously hard to read, and you often have to go into some slightly confusing menus to achieve what you want. The manual is clear, but very basic. The 1266 manual was much more comprehensive (I like to look things up, Zoom, not trawl the Internet watching videos). And why no optical out? Or dedicated drum track? I really miss that. And don't get me started on trying to record a 'rhythm song'. Don't get me wrong, for anyone coming to the R24 new, it's a very clever, multi-functional gizmo. But, I dunno. It could have been so much better somehow. I would have paid another £100 just to have the ease of use of the MRS-1266. Something to think about Zoom...?

I had done my research online prior to my purchase. The YouTube tutorials by 'topdazzle' were invaluable and guided my decision to buy the Zoom R24.
