The Friedman PT-20 (or Pink Taco) is a miniature powerhouse. With the same incredibly powerful hot rodded British tones that Friedman are known for but in a smaller case making it perfect for gigging guitarists on the move or for those that only need 20w of power.
Single Channel - Loads Of Tone
This amplifier may look quite simple with just your standard 3 band EQ as well as master volume and gain controls but it actually has a lot more to it than you might expect. With the gain set low and the volume high you can get some incredibly loud clean and crunch tones without much compression.
Turn the gain up though and you will go through classic Plexi to modern rock tones with a touch of compression and sweet saturation keeping your sound tight and round. Just listening to the amplifier it is hard to believe it is just 20w as it has all of the punch and power of a much larger head.
Made In The USA
While the tone is certainly British the Friedman PT-20 has been handwired in the USA to make sure that it is buit incredibly well. No stone has been left unturned with this amplifier and from the original design to the QC at the end build quality and reliability are top concerns for the team at Friedman.
Taking a look at the amp a little bit deeper than face value you will see some stunning handwired circuitry. This contains a trio of 12AX7 preamp valves and two EL84 power amp valves giving this amp all of the power you need for your next gig.
Voicing Toggle Switch
The small toggle switch on the front will change the voicing of the amp. The 3 voicings available are:
- Low gain - Think Plexi-style vintage gain territory
- Mid gain - Typical PT20 tone, or a lot like a JCM-type gain sound
- High gain - Very similar to the famous Friedman BE100
The new voicing switch was created so that you can make the most out of the amp in studio or live. If you like running the gain from the amp then the BE100 setting would perfect. But if you prefer to cook the amp with some drive pedals in the front, use the middle position for a Plexi-style voicing. The positions look as follows:
- Toggle in the middle: Plexi
- Toggle in the left position: JCM
- Toggle in the right position: BE100
Here's what Friedman say about the PT-20 Head
The Friedman PT-20 is the baby sister to the critically acclaimed BE-100, created for the many musicians who have been begging for the Friedman sound in a small, compact, lightweight, manageable format.
The PT-20 is a super versatile hand-wired, 20-watt, EL84 powered, single channel fire breather that is capable of producing many styles of music from blues to classic rock to heavy metal by merely adjusting the gain and master controls.
Many people don't believe a 20-watt amp can deliver the tight bottom end and midrange that a 100-watt amp can produce. The PT-20 proves otherwise! Friedman designed this amp to sound like a 100-watt monster, utilizing custom transformers and the cleanest possible signal path.
Plug into the PT-20 and you will instantly notice the harmonically rich detailed chords and resonating single note lines. This amp cleans up exceptionally well with the guitar's volume knob, even with the amp on higher gain settings.
The PT-20 was designed to take pedals well and loves boosts, OD's, phasers, flangers, tremolos, wahs. The brand new ultra transparent series effects loop takes time-based effects pedals and rack units equally well. The handcrafted in USA PT-20 features beautiful black tolex, tongue and groove Baltic Birch construction and built to withstand the rigors of the road.
