In the 1950s Seth Lover's 'PAF' humbuckers caused a revolution in guitar sound. This 36th Anniversary Humbucker from DiMarzio is made to recreate the classic low output humbucker tone of those original PAFs. The sound is sweet and balanced with a slight peak in the mid-range.
In the early days humbuckers weren't made as either neck or bridge models and likewise the DP103 can work in either neck or bridge position. However DiMarzio do recommend considering it as a 'neck' humbucker because of its tone.
Here's what DiMarzio say about the PAF 36th Anniversary Humbucker
The Dimarzio DP103 PAF 36th Anniversary Neck has all the characteristics that make a great vintage humbucker: a soft magnetic field, sweet tone, perfect balance between warmth and clarity, the ability to go from clean to distorted by pick attack alone.
Although the DP103 PAF 36th has a weak magnetic field, the sound is well defined - almost like a single-coil. The weaker magnetic field allows the strings to vibrate longer, as well as focus and articulate the attack and output. Dimarzio uses computer-controlled winders to consistently layer the 42-gauge custom-coated wire, achieving the exact frequency responset. Then it’s dipped in a custom formula to eliminate squeal and microphonics.
The cover is made from nickel-silver and the plating makes it more magnetically transparent than the originals. The PAF 36th Anniversary Neck is smooth but not muddy. It allows the bass strings in the neck position to avoid muddiness, and the treble strings in the bridge position to be warm and not brittle.
