Product Description

A peculiar instrument, but not one to turn your nose up at. The Bass VI was the secret weapon for sixties and seventies producers and experimental bassists.

This Squier Classic Vibe series bass (yes, bass not baritone) combines old school aesthetics with modern hardware and custom electronics for the optimal playing experience, as you follow your instrumental journey.

Body and Neck

A four-screw bolt-on neck connects the Poplar body and Maple neck – a relatively lightweight yet sturdy combination.

You’ll feel right at home on the tapered C-shaped neck profile with an easily playable 9.5” radius fingerboard.

Sound

The Fender-designed alnico single coil pickups deliver supreme clarity and cut for a bass. If you want to be heard in a mix, this is the bassists’ instrument of choice.

It’s tuned one octave below a regular guitar, as normal. But quite clearly it has six strings!

You can play along with complete freedom, be it keeping the rhythm or performing lead lines which sound great through the middle and neck pickups.

Hardware

The Bass VI utilises a classic floating bridge system for strong bends or subtle tremolo effects. You can get truly creative with your playing.

It also features 1960s inspired headstock markings, nickel-plated hardware and a tint gloss neck finish to get you in the experimental seventies’ mood.

It's a brilliant and slightly mad guitar. Inspired quite a change in sound though. It's worth the punt.

On first inspection, the bass looked great, but when I first plugged it in I noticed that the jack socket wouldn't hold the cable securely. Bending the pin didn't resolve it so I had to replace the socket with a sturdier Switchcraft one, which was easy to do but shouldn't be an issue on a brand new instrument. Having had it for a couple of weeks, I've noticed a minor imperfection in the finish near the trem. It looks as though the finish isn't completely flat under the clear coat, but is only visible in certain light, so it wasn't immediately obvious. I've also found gaps around two of the inlays on the fretboard. The cut out in the pickguard around the switch plate is a bit rough around the edges. All minor things but Squier's QC could be better. The stock strings are awful; they're far too light to handle the tuning, especially the low E. It's generally accepted that they need to be replaced to get the best out of it, but it's pretty annoying, especially when Fender makes a set of Bass VI strings in the right gauge. For all the minor annoyances, I do like the Bass VI. It's great to play once it gets a decent set-up and sounds good too.

The setup is not good the E string is very loose and buzzing Thicker strings and a good setup will solve the problem

Amazing bass, plays and sounds like a Fender for a third or half the cost. The stock low E string is a little flimsy, but definitely playable. I put on higher gauge set (La Bella 95 to 26) and it's absolutely perfect, but that's just my personal preference. One of the best basses I've ever played; I don't know if I can even go back to a 4 string.
