Product Description

The Fender Player Series is effectively the replacement of their Mexican-made Standard range. The same basic formula applies; legendary Fender design, classic wood combinations and instantly recognisable tone, but at a wallet-friendly price point. But with the Player Series, Fender have made a number of tweaks to take these instruments up a notch, aimed squarely at an ever-changing and increasingly demanding market. Expect timeless Fender sound and feel, but with modern playability and workhorse reliability to boot!

Body & Neck

In keeping with decades of tradition, Fender have opted for an Alder body for the Player Series Telecaster. Known for being simultaneously lightweight and tonally resonant, it's balanced in every sense of the word. Its sound is often described as rich, with some emphasis on upper-midrange brightness, and its weight and density means it's pretty easy to thrash around in a frenzy of creative expression - we've all been there!

Then there's the other classic Tele tonewood: Maple. Known for its density, varied grain pattern and snappy tone, it perfectly complements the Alder used for the body. The addition of Maple ensures plenty of twangy tonal response, perfect for accentuating lead and clean parts regardless of your musical style. The one-piece design means your fretboard surface is the same as the neck, providing plenty of attack and even, comfortable navigation of the 22-fret range. Maple is also known for its tendency to age well, gradually darkening over time; give it a few years, and your Tele's neck and fretboard will begin to reveal a beautifully bronzed appearance!

In contrast, the use of gloss polyester coating on the body means that your guitar's finish will remain vivid and untainted for quite some time. Fender began using gloss polyester finishes back in the '70s, and it quickly become popular because of its durability. It lasts longer, it's more resistant to scratches, and some even say it allows your pickups to sing a little louder - all we know is it looks great!

Hardware & Electronics

Fender have loaded the Player Series Tele with two Alnico V Tele Single-coils in the traditional Telecaster configuration (uncovered & slanted in the bridge, covered and straight in the neck). The Alnico V magnetic configuration is a little more edgy than its counterparts, with a slightly higher output than works wonders for your tone. Combined with the Alder and Maple tonewood combination, you get all of that Tele twang that you know and love, but with a fuller midrange bark, not to mention a more cohesive response with chordal parts. This makes the Alnico V perfect for modern styles - from popping indie to technical metal and just about anything in between!

The bridge isn't quite the classic Tele configuration; rather than the old-school 3-saddle design, the 6-saddle design with block steel saddles offers greater tuning stability and arguably better resonance in the body. Though it plays a small part, it ultimately contributes to an instrument that's designed to be played night after night and consistently deliver.

Top it off with Standard Cast Fender tuners, a 3-ply scratchplate and classic knurled flat-top controls, all in a glorious chrome finish, and you've got an instrument that can take anything you throw at it - a Fender Telecaster through and through!

Short summation, If you're looking for a solid Tele with great pickups out of the box then this is a great option. May need some slight adjustments to make it ideal though. I bought this guitar looking for a Tele that would play like a more modern instrument but keep the overall sound of a classic Tele. The guitar certainly delivers in that respect, I like the bridge better than the standard ashtray variant and palm muting is certainly easier on it once you get used to hand placement. The look and feel of the guitar is overall very nice but this is where some of my minor issues come into play. I'm not sure if this is down to Andertons or Fender but without being able to easily verify either way, it's up for speculation in my mind but the guitar arrived with a few finishing issues. For a start, the volume knob had a bit of slight discolouration which looked like it could've either been down to someone having used the instrument prior and returned it or the knobs Fender are using just aren't partial to transit or changing elements. Either way, it's not the best first impression and would make me thoroughly check an instrument from Fender in the future for similar issues. Another issue was two tiny but noticeable knicks on the 11th fret by the upper E and B string which would cause them to catch and sound even when just gently pressing and bending them up and down. This was easily rectified by sanding down the little blemishes but it's not really what you want from a guitar in the £600+ range brand new. On a cheaper instrument I'd have way less of an issue with this inconsistencies but at this price it's definitely a bummer. Having said all that, once these issues are out of the equation, the guitar played well out of the box and the action was about right for me. I tend to play pretty hard (a habit I'm trying to dial back) so the action height felt about right to me but you may run into issues trying to go super low especially with a thicker string gauge. Playability wise though overall I'd say it's very good. Maybe not quite as pristine feeling as some other instruments in my collection but still really good. The guitar really shines with the pickups and the sounds you can get from it though. I have a set of Bare Knuckle pickups that I took out of a previous Tele and my intention was to see how the stock pickups sounded and potentially swap them out but I'm really not feeling the need because they're so good as is. The bridge is brilliant for riffing and lead lines and the neck sounds round and bright with a warm low end. Perfect! The middle position is also extremely usable and might be one of the pleasant surprises for me. I play mostly post rock style stuff and I feel like I can get the chunky riffs from the bridge and all the clean pristine passages from the other positions so it's perfect. All in all, I recommend these guitars but feel for the now increased asking price, there could be room for improvement finishing wise.

I might have won the Mexican lottery because the only 'issues' I have with the guitar are that the string tree is a bit naff but they are cheap and easy to replace even when buying the best in the market. Also there is a slight bit of missing lacquer right up against a few frets. Almost unnoticeable. Apart from that it's a flawless finish. It has no fret sprout issues and It was actually almost in tune when unboxed which was surprising. For the price it's a very well made guitar. If you just need a tele for the studio I don't think you need anymore than this really.

The Fender Player Telecaster is great value for money. Nicely finished and sounds brilliant. It's surprisingly well set-up from the factory, but could be improved with a professional set-up, which it'll get soon. Looks seriously cool in white.

I expect to change strings, but fret work and set up poor. Has bad fret sprout and a couple of high frets, poor for a Fender the set up of a Chapman I purchased was better plus the chapman arrived in a box in a box unlike the Fender
