The Custom 22 is now regarded as a classic modern instrument. A double-cutaway design, set-neck build and top-of-the-line hardware and electronics lead to one versatile guitar - no matter whether you're a regular in the studio or on stage!
Manufactured in Maryland
Great care and attention to detail has gone into this instrument. From their Maryland (USA) factory, PRS produced this guitar through a combination of both hand and machine manufacturing. Using both techniques makes for a model that delivers a seriously accurate construction, as well a level of care that can only be present from a personal touch.
Boasting a mahogany body, topped with a carved figured maple, the guitar projects a well-balanced, rich sound. You'll notice a defined mid-range that's excellent at cutting through any kind of mix. A mahogany neck (cut to a regular profile) has been made slim enough for shredding, while also still being round enough for steady rhythm playing.
Less Frets, but More Tones?
Taking away 2 frets may not seem like a big deal. However, for a dual humbucker guitar, it completely affects the tone of the instrument – in a good way! As the Rosewood fretboard is slightly shorter, to maintain the same scale length and tension you need to move the bridge further back. This therefore widens the gap between the neck and bridge pickups, and while the bridge pickup will still sound the same and have plenty of bite, the neck pickup will produce a warmer tone as it is closer to the centre of the guitar’s scale length.
Electronics & Hardware
The PRS Custom 22 is equipped with a set of 85/15 pickups. These vintage-inspired humbuckers are known for their clarity and presence, but can shift seamlessly to suit more nuanced, intimate playing too. Two mini-toggle switches can be used to put just one or both pickups into true single-coil or humbucking mode - allowing for some nice tonal variation depending on your needs.
PRS Phase III Locking tuners ensure your tuning will remain stable at all times. Not to mention the fact that they make string changes an absolute breeze too!
