Egnater Amplification
Egnater Amplification is a popular brand, renowned for merging modern tonal versatility with classy, boutique-style aesthetics.
Egnater may have a fairly modest catalogue compared to other amp companies, but their streamlined range reflects their ‘quality over quantity’ ethos. With all-valve heads and combos, Egnater’s amps boast authentic, high-end tones without costing a fortune.
With Richard Fortus (Guns N’ Roses), Ed Kowalczyk (Live) and other high-profile touring musicians endorsing their gear, you can be assured that Egnater produce pro-standard amplifiers.
History of Egnater
The company was founded by Bruce Egnater over 30 years ago; inspired by a passion to design amps that could match the tones of his heroes. As a Detroit citizen, Bruce grew up with the 70s rock scene, and became aware that guitar players wanted louder and more powerful amplifiers that could offer distortion.
Motivated by this discovery, Bruce enrolled at the Detroit University Engineering School to gain a deeper understanding of electronics. This knowledge quickly became useful, and during his studies he repaired equipment at his local music store, Zoppi’s Music.
After graduating, Egnater opened his own repair shop. Specialising in amp modification, Bruce decided to start building his very own amps from the ground up. As an early pioneer of the “cascaded gain” phenomenon, this allowed players to add distortion without increasing volume. But that wasn’t the only innovation, as Egnater also largely invented the multi-channel valve amp, letting users attain clean and distorted tones from one amplifier.
The Egnater Amp Range
Here at Andertons Music Co, we stock the renowned Tweaker amplifier lineup and also the potent-sounding Rebel range.
Tweaker
The Tweaker is perhaps one of the most versatile valve amplifiers available today. Considering its relatively affordable price, there’s a reason why this amp is so popular. Used often by Rabea and Matt in our ‘Sound Like’ series on Andertons TV, its name is indicative of the amount of flexibility it offers.
Boasting 2 channels and a raft of voicing switches, you can tailor your tone to the very finest of detail. An essential 3-band EQ gives you that familiar control layout, and with the head versions available in three different wattages, you can find the perfect amount of power for your suited venue.
The 15w head and combo are particularly portable, yet still project plenty of volume and power despite their deceptively small sizes.
Rebel
Although not quite as "tweakable", the Rebel is a hot-sounding amp that can really bark. With a rawer and more old-school tone, the Rebel hearkens back to that nostalgic 70s era but can scream when the gain is cranked.
Great for metal or hard rock, the Rebel’s clean tones are very airy and full too, staying pure even when turned up loud. Also available in head and combo formats, the Rebel is another strong contender from Egnater.
