Old Blood Noise Black Fountain Delay

Written by

Elliot Stent

Old Blood Noise make interesting effects that can be used for everything from your standard pop/rock licks to full on experimental and ambient mixes. The Black Fountain brings back the beautiful sounds of the oil can delay to a small and compact pedal. The Oil Drum delays of old are known for their pitch shifting beauty and their ability to create huge atmospheres that work great for ambient tunes.

Generations Of Oil Can

While it is not an effect we see much nay more there has been a lot of evolution in the world of oil can delays. That is why on the front of the pedal you have a three way selector switch that goes between Modern, Organ and Vintage. In Modern mode you get a nice clean and clear effect that has all of the modulation with minimal grit and a long tail.

Vintage offers up a grittier sound with more artefacts and a slightly more lo fi feel but built around the repeats in the Modern mode. Finally the Organ mode which is based around the old Tel Ray Deluxe Organ Tone is a short delay sound with approximately 211ms of time. This mode also comes with a short simple spring reverb effect in the mix really giving it an authentic analogue feel.

New V2 Features

Old Blood Noise have released an update to this pedal that gives you more control than ever before and changes a few things around for a better experience. For example you can now plug in an expression pedal to control either the Speed or Reverb controls. You can change which paramet is affected by a dipswitch on the inside. They have also added a master output trim pot to the internals and a clickless switch for less noise.

Here's what Old Blood Noise say about the Black Fountain Delay

The Black Fountain reflects back to the days before digital delay, emulating the sounds of the famed and elusive "oil can delay" units.  These units emphasized a chorus-like modulation on the repeats of the effect signal as well as a beautiful and warm repeat cycle.

The Modern mode emulates the classic long delay "oil can" units such as the Morley EDL, Tel-Ray Model 10 and Fender Echo-Reverb. The Time and Repeat controls mimic the functions of the vintage units, while the Fluid control introduces modulation based on the characteristic "wobble" of the electrostatic delay platter.  The Vintage mode is similar in function to the Modern mode, but has a grittier and gainier feel to the repeats.  Both the Modern and Vintage mode have a delay time of 800 milliseconds.

The Organ Tone mode is based on the Tel-Ray Deluxe Organ Tone, Fender Dimension IV and other short-delay "oil can" units.  The vintage units had a fixed delay time of approximately 20 milliseconds, which is implemented here, but the Black Fountain goes above and beyond the original units by incorporating variable Rate and Depth controls for the modulation effect. In addition, the Mix control is capable of dialing a 100% wet signal so a vibrato effect may be produced. The Organ Tone mode also features a simple reverb that mimics the single-spring tank in the original Deluxe Organ Tone effect.  The Organ Tone mode has a delay time of 211 milliseconds.
