G&L’s SB-2 is what Leo Fender believed was the most comfortable bass he ever designed. And that’s saying something from the luthier that started it all. They took a P-bass shape and subtly tweaked it for a modern playing experience.
They’ve packed the SB-2 with all the features you’d expect from a bass first released in 1982, plus the added innovations of one of the best luthiers to have ever lived.
The Tribute line of basses house great features usually found on G&L’s Californian-made series. It’s equipped with their in-house Saddle-Lock bridge design transferring more resonance into the body for a greater playing experience.
While 21 medium-jumbo nickel frets (yes, 21) deliver high-end smoothness for great playability. At the headstock are stylish vintage open back tuning heads, one of the many design decisions that make this bass so iconic.
G&L-designed alnico V split-coil pickups provide the classic growl with added versatility for a variety of genres. A Magnetic Field Design single coil pickup in the bridge adds more snap and bite. The SB-2 has a smooth low end, rounded highs and because of its pickup choice can flick between punchy or slightly scooped mids. Overall a tight, focused sound.
There are two tone controls and one volume so there’s plenty of variation to work with. Roll off on the tone knobs to get a 50’s or 60’s vibe. Crank it and the you’ll have a startlingly powerful sound.
Body and neck
The SB-2 sports a rich Mahogany body in a classy gloss finish. The neck is made of a crisp, bright hard-rock Maple, with a modern C shape for fast playability. It’s topped with a beautifully dark Rosewood fretboard.
