Product Description

The Sterling by Music Man StingRay Ray4 is a workhorse of a bass that captures that iconic StingRay look and tone at a more affordable price point.

Features

  • Single ceramic humbucker delivers that classic StringRay thump.
  • 2-band active preamp for shaping your tone.
  • 34" scale length and 9.5" fingerboard radius offers classic playability

Body and Neck

The Ray4 features a basswood body that helps keep the weight of the instrument down and is paired with a maple neck and a matching maple fingerboard. This bass has a 34" scale length and a 9.5" radius fingerboard - a tried and trusted combo that offers classic feel and playability.

Electronics

At the heart of the Ray4 is the single ceramic humbucker in the bridge position. It's this pickup that provides that classic thick and punchy sound that StingRays are revered for. To help get that tone to sit right in the mix the Ray4 features an onboard active 2-band preamp so you can tweak your sound to fit your needs.

It’s the cheapest option for getting a “stingray” new I think. Build quality varied a little between the few I tried but found one that was very good. Excellent fretwork and overall attention to detail. The electronics are often criticised as “very hot” and not producing a good sound. I tend to agree with this but you can turn down the volume knob a little to get a good tone. Certainly adequate for a beginner. I bought mine as a project and have already replaced the pick-up and preamp and I am very satisfied with the results. Not quite an American Stingray, but very good and didn’t cost me £3k. Great instrument to start on, good starting point for a project if you like tinkering.

Good quality item!!!!!!!!

This bass is a real gem and at this price you are getting a real bargain. The action is very low , the neck is thin and satin smooth, reminds me of a Fender Jazz bass. The bridge is solid and easy to set up if you want to adjust anything. The controls work brilliantly with active and tone controls centre notched. The pickup is really good for this price and there are many useful sounds to be got from it, plenty of punch and growl, or low full bass, to bright jazz bass ish. Build quality is excellent, don't be put off by the made in China, or Indonesia tag, the finish is excellent and doesn't feel cheap or flimsy.
