I'm after a airline friendly travel guitar to play on my regular trips abroad. I've had my eye on the Blackstar ST for a while. In some ways it is better for this than the full version. The ST has a bolt on neck so can be made even smaller if needed for portability. It is also made from less exotic woods, which is helpful when travelling in zones with assiduous customs officials. It’s worth noting the pickup is 4 wire on the ST, so it is simple for you or someone in the know to retrofit the coil splitting option on one pot, which provides two sounds as per the more expensive option. Split the pickup is brighter and scooped (may need a bit of treble roll off on tone). As a humbucker knocking back the volume to 80% gives a natural tone with more mid range. 100% is a bit more punch so set up like this it is very flexible. The guitar benefits from a full setup out the box (I run with a low action), but once complete I have found it putting impromptu smiles on my face as it is just fun to play! There are compromises in the design (e.g. closer scale spacing) but once playing I have found it easy to forget these. I picked up as an 'Epic deal' at £120, I cannot argue with the value at this price and look forward to having something half decent to play with a headphone amp on my future trips.

Very good sound and good for smaller stature fell I brought it for. Trust rod is unique. But easier to adjust.

I chose this guitar for my 6-year-old son. This is his first guitar, and despite the fact that for him it is more a toy than a musical instrument, I wanted to leave a pleasant impression. The guitar is ideally suited in size, weight, and the strings have a fairly soft tension. As for the sound, humbuckers is just not for me. If I were choosing a travel guitar for myself, then of all the options I would prefer the Vox Mark lll Mini, but for a child this is not a very convenient form in the form of a drop.
