Supro is a popular boutique brand, providing us with nostalgic, old-school amplifiers that recapture the legendary '50s and '60s sound. The Blues King 12 is certainly no exception. With 15 watts of headroom and a single 12" speaker, the Blues King might not sound like much on paper. However, this valve-powered combo is delightfully loud; able to pump out exquisite, British-style clean and overdrive tones.
Unbridled Valve Power
For traditionalists, nothing quite beats the raw tones of a valve amp. That's why the Supro Blues King features a single 6L6 power amp tube and the industry standard 12AX7 valve in its preamp section. The iconic 6L6 is synonymous with American tones, but Supro is adamant that the Blues King projects that classic British bark.
The 12AX7 and FET-driven fat boost function pushes the front-end gain, with the Blues King's high-gain mode using a series of cascaded FETs in order to deliver an aggressive distortion. This is of course accompanied by a flexible 3-band EQ section, letting you sculpt your tone to perfection.
Although old-school is cool, for modern applications you'll need something that has some updated features. That's why the Blues King has footswitchable boost and gain functions, letting you add multiple layers of stackable overdrive on-the-fly. For gigging, this is a great feature for when you need that extra kick of volume and sustain for solos or heavy sections.
An analogue spring reverb is another excellent appointment, brilliant for sprucing up clean tones. It doesn't end there either, as the Blues King also has a built-in effects loop for placing modulation and time-based pedals in, while the line-out also allows you to record direct into an audio interface or mixer.
