Introducing the Dusk Tiger
Just when you thought you couldn't do anything else to the Les Paul, those folks at Gibson come up with a guitar that is set to be one of the most innovative music products of 2010. The Dusk Tiger represents the beginning of a revolution when it comes to tonal possibilites and sound quality.
The DuskTiger follows on from Gibson's developments with the Dark Fire Guitar which began to stretch the possibilities of the electric guitar with Gibson's Robot automatic tuning technology. The Dusk Tiger will feature a new and improved Robot tuning system with significantly increased battery life and Gibson give you two battery packs so you don't have to plug in your guitar to charge it, and you'll never have to stop playing.
The Tiger features a 4 band parametric EQ which allows for infinitely more tone shaping than any other guitar on the market today. Whilst normal guitars have a fixed tone control (that usually only cuts), the Dusk Tiger allows you to choose exactly which frequencies to cut and how wide the band you are cutting is (Q Control).
The Dusk Tiger also features a low impedance output for superior noise rejection and higer fidelity sound. This is in addition to the tradition 1/4" Jack output that can be used to drive traditional amplifers. Impedance matching is achieved by flicking a switch near the output jack, you can switch from passive mode (normal high impedance mode) to a low impedance mode. Depending on your application, low impedance may be better.
In a technical sense low impedance is always preferable, and Les Paul himself - a recording engineer as well as a guitarist - realised this and preferred to use low impedance guitars when recording. This is because electric guitars which have a high impedance are susceptible to annoying buzzes and other interference (like we're all used to). It sounds like by embracing low impedance technology, Gibson are trying to change all that and get rid of that noise forever. Now that other technology is more adaptable to changes in the standard, we suspect the Dusk Tiger will be the first in a long line of guitars outputting higher quality, low-z signals.
The guitar will come in a custom hard case with an accessory pack that includes everything you need to interface with your computer via firewire, MIDI and stereo cables, a battery charger and spare battery, and special Dusk Tiger Guitar Rig and Ableton software.
The firewire output of the guitar splits the guitar signal into 8 separate signals - one for each string and one each for the piezo pickup and the traditional pickups. I'm sure you can imagine the implications this has for recording as well as creating different tones and dynamics that were previously not possible.
Updated Chameleon Tone technology will appear on the Dusk Tiger (it was first seen on the Dark Fire guitar). It allows the player to emulate all the tones of classic electric guitars.
We musn't forget that the Dusk Tiger will be a quality instrument first and foremost. Gibson have certainly not skimped on the instrument quality as you will see. Based on the ultimate classic guitar - the Gibson Les Paul - Dusk Tiger features a top made from New Exotic Snakewood (East Indian climbing shrub with twisted limbs and roots resembling serpents) and a 60s Profile Mahogany Neck with Ebony Fingerboard. Full details of the guitar's specification can be found in Gibson's description below.
Although the Dusk Tiger won't exactly be replacing traditional guitars anytime soon - it is definitely going to be a catalyst for changes in the products we see, and with a company like Gibson behind it you can trust that the design and execution of this guitar won't just be to satisfy a gimmick - it will be a high quality instrument first and foremost that encourages guitarists to explore new and exciting creative avenues!

Here's what Gibson say about the Dusk Tiger
A killer guitar with a look and construction that has never been seen before. Dusk Tiger represents the state of the art in electric guitars, redefining what the guitar can do with the integration of pioneering technology with the most advanced design in the industry, all in a Limited Edition package with only 1,000 sold worldwide.
Unparalleled Tonal Flexibility
With a tonal flexibility that is unmatched by any other, Dusk Tiger keeps 100 percent of the purity of tone realized through analog technology, and also expands on Dark Fire’s tones by offering ultra-low-noise, programmable on-board multiband EQ controlled by flexible editing software.
Optimized For Stage and Studio
Dusk Tiger is the perfect guitar both on stage and in the studio. The combination of magnetic and piezo pickups gives traditional and more "acoustic" guitar tones, while separate outputs for each string allow you to create sounds from classic to beyond futuristic. Add to that a multichannel FireWire interface and Ableton Live 8 and your possibilities are unlimited.
Exceptional Ease Of Use
All the tones and the 18 user-programmable alternate tunings (featuring third-generation Robot Tuning Technology) are easily accessible through a streamlined, stage-friendly interface, designed for ease of use and inspired by intensive focus groups with leading guitarists.
A History Of Continued Refinement
Technological advancements in design allow for lower current consumption, unprecedented reliability, and the use of common camera batteries that can be replaced in seconds - and offer much longer battery life. What's more, these refinements have led to reduced manufacturing costs, making Dusk Tiger the most affordable high-tech guitar yet.
Ultimately, Dusk Tiger is a beautiful, smoothly playable guitar. It recalls the time-honored Les Paul body lines, but presents them in a guitar with a flat top (coupled to a tone-chambered back) made from exotic hardwood covered with golden, amber, and dark chocolate hues, and accented by a unique new pickguard and control layout. Dusk Tiger is set up using advanced Plek technology to insure uniform feel and extreme playability.
The World's Most Advanced Guitar
Dusk Tiger reflects Gibson's commitment to stretching the boundaries of the electric guitar, while honoring the elements that make classic guitars so desirable in the first place, bringing you simply the most astonishing innovation in the history of the guitar.
A LARGER BANK OF TUNING AND TONE PRESETS
Dusk Tiger retains the tonal purity achieved through analog technology, but expands on Dark Fire's nine iconic tones by offering not just advanced coil switching/tapping/phase flipping, but an ultra-low-noise, programmable on-board multiband EQ controlled by flexible editing software. Guitarists can take full advantage of Dusk Tiger's exquisite onboard tones, but also create their own variations and signature sounds.
A Quicker, Smarter MCK
Now it's easier than ever to control the Dusk Tiger's powerful features. The Master Control Knob (MCK II) go above and beyond what any tone knob could ever do by giving you easy access to unlimited tonal possibilities and its automatic tuning capabilities.
Speed and Comfort
The MCK II has been completely redesign for simpler, faster, and more intuitive function, with much improved ergonomics and a sophisticated full color matrix display featuring LEDs and high-tec light pipe technology. These features work to deliver a more powerful and easier to see visual display under any light condition.
Adjust Tone and Tunings
In addition to the MCK II's top mounted display, LED-lit symbols now adorn its outer edge, which blend with the color of the knob so that they're only visible when lit. The Dusk Tiger's new MCK II also controls the ability to change pickups and coils and to access preset tone settings, allowing you the ability to adjust tone and tunings automatically and simultaneously, even several times during the same song.
Tone and Tuning Banks
The MCK II features color coded tone and tuning banks, with a total of 98 user preset positions for sound and 99 preset positions for tuning available, allowing the guitarist to easily switch between a multitude of sound possibilities.
Sound Select Mode (Green)
In Sound Select mode the user can select between 10 sound presets simply by turning the MCK. The center display will show the preset's ID, giving you a wide variety of sounds from the classic '58 Les Paul or the rich, full sound of the 335, to a country twang or a funky sharp rhythm guitar. The presets will even allow the round and full tone of a Gibson Acoustic.
Tune Mode (Blue)
In Tune mode a selected tuning can be applied to the strings simply by turning the MCK. The outer LEDs will reflect the current MCK position, with the center display showing the corresponding preset ID, with a total of 11 tuning presets. Within seconds you can change your tuning from standard to open G, to dropped D, to E flat, to DADGAD and back to standard. When the strings are strummed, the Robo Heads are turned until the strings are in tune.
Preset Mode (Yellow)
In Preset mode, both sound and tuning of a selected preset can be applied. This mode is filled with an incredible assortment of tones ranging from gent to jazz to a clear, punching humbucker.
Function Mode (Red)
In Function mode, the user can select between different system functions. The Chromatic Tuner setting detects a plucked string and displays the nearest note and the offset of the frequency to that note. The Intonation setting allows the tuning of a string to a currently active tuning by comparing the frequency of empty string and 12th fret. Other settings include Custom Tuning, tuning to a Reference Pitch, String Up and String Down tuning, User bank selection and a Setup Menu that allows access to setup parameters and functions that control the system behavior.
The software provides an intuitive, user friendly interface for editing EQ settings and frequencies, changing pickup configurations, creating alternate tunings, and developing presets for your personalized tone and tuning banks.
To create your own Chameleon tones and tunings simply connect your guitar to the RIP box and activate the MCK. With a few clicks of the mouse, you can change each string's note or frequency, as well as switch between pickup types including single-coil, double-coil, double-coil out of phase, and double-coil parallel. The possibilities are unlimited with 4 Band EQ customization of your magnetic and piezo pickups.
The Dusk Tiger's vastly improved output jacks also include a built-in active, low-impedance converter comprising Gibson's new, proprietary LP-Z High Definition Impedance Circuit. The player can select either a traditional, passive high-z output, or the LP-Z's active low-z output.
The LP-Z creates an immediate improvement in fidelity, allowing you to run long lengths of cable without losing any quality, delivering the highest definition sound that has ever come from an electric guitar. The difference has been compared to the visual difference in moving from old low-definition TV systems to a new high-def system.
The Dusk Tiger's battery system and power circuit have also been significantly improved to last nearly twice as long, even with the guitar's enhanced performance. You can now expect nearly 500 tunings from a single charge.
The Dusk Tiger is crafted from a top made of Grade-A marblewood, an elegant hardwood from Suriname in South America, with a high density and an extremely beautiful grain. The marblewood is joined together with strips of ebony, and attached to a tone-chambered mahogany back.
The Dusk Tiger begins with the timeless lines and proportions of the original Les Paul Standard, but its stunning marblewood-and-ebony top is flat, rather than arched, to present a contemporary update on a classic form. Its mahogany back is chambered using a patented new system that both enhances the tonal response of the guitar and reduces its weight dramatically.
Every Dusk Tiger benefits from Gibson's proven chambering technique, which leaves each guitar with perfect tone, balance, and weight. Prior to gluing the marblewood-and-ebony cap to the mahogany body, the expert craftsmen at Gibson USA carve out carefully mapped-out chambers in the body using a Computer Numeric Controlled (CNC) router.
The Dusk Tiger wears Gibson's new Tiger Skin nitrocellulose finish, which employs several new processes to bring out the stunning beauty of the exceptional mahogany used in this model. The marblewood top is enhanced by a rich, natural finish, while the striking dark sides, neck, and unique tiger-striped back are enhanced by a Brilliant Copper finish.
The Dusk Tiger undergoes a more intensive process than most Gibson models to enhance both the look and the sonic benefits of its finish. It is hand-finished in nitrocellulose in a process that is carefully monitored to ensure minimum build-up, in an effort to produce a finish that breathes with the guitar and enhances natural resonance.
The marblewood-and-ebony top presents much of the density and definition of maple, with plenty of clarity in the highs and firmness in the lows, but with its own enhanced tonal depth. The mahogany back brings in that wood’s legendary blend of warmth and sweetness, while together they work to create a guitar with impressive sustain, too.
The Dusk Tiger is set up for optimum playability with a PerfectSetup by the revolutionary, computer-controlled PLEK system, which has been acknowledged as the most precise guitar set-up technology in the world today.
NECK AND HEADSTOCK
The Dusk Tiger's neck is made from one solid piece of mahogany, cut with a "quarter sawn" orientation for improved strength and resonance, and glued to the body at a 1.6-degree angle. Mahogany is one of the best traditional woods for Gibson electric guitar necks and is an excellent partner to the marblewood and mahogany body.
The Dusk Tiger carries an dark, tightly grained, ebony fingerboard. The 12-inch radius of the fingerboard provides smooth note bending capabilities and eliminates "dead" or "choked out" notes, common occurrences on fingerboards with lesser radiuses.
The neck on the Dusk Tiger is carved to a slim and extremely comfortable profile, running from a depth of 0.800" at the 1st fret to 0.875" at the 12th fret.
When fitting the neck and body together, we take advantage of our precise measuring equipment so that all angles, pitches and alignments maintain a tolerance within .005 of an inch. Not only does this help to keep your guitar in tune but it also maintains proper string alignment relative to the fingerboard.
The fingerboard carries unique acrylic Tiger-Fang inlays at the 5th and 12th frets, which help to give its dark ebony fingerboard a sleek, exotic appearance. Full side-dot position markers are also included at the traditional positions.
The nut on the Dusk Tiger is made from a special black Teflon-based material known as Tefzell, which allows for smoother and faster tuning action. The width of the nut is approximately 1.695".
The headstock of the Dusk Tiger is equipped with Gibson's revolutionary Robot Tuners. The redesigned Robot Tuners on the Dusk Tiger are significantly smaller and lighter, and more in line with the size and weight of conventional tuners. They're also radically faster.
You can now access any preset tuning in less than one second, which means you can realistically change tunings in the middle of a song, if needed. What's more, the tuners are now automatically engaged to operate both electronically or individually by hand.
Tuning Capacity/Battery Longevity
The Dusk Tiger's battery system and power circuit have also been significantly improved to last nearly twice as long, even with the guitar's enhanced performance. You can now expect nearly 500 tunings from a single charge.
The guitar's aluminum strap buttons are the same style and design that Gibson has used since the early 1950s.
Gibson's Burst Bucker 3 is a highly acclaimed PAF-style humbucker, wound to the hotter side of the vintage spectrum for plenty of cutting power and excellent midrange punch, while retaining the warmth and richness that these legendary pickups are known for.
The P-90h is a radical new design that captures all of the traditional P-90 single-coil's depth and dimension in the neck position, with outstanding clarity and high-end sheen, but rejects the annoying 60-cycle hum that such pickups can be prone to.
The model carries a unique new pickguard design plated in Dusk Tiger chrome.
The Dusk Tiger carries a groundbreaking reinvention of the classic Tune-o-matic which actually consists of six individual piezo pickups - one for each saddle/string - so the Dusk Tiger's bridge is not only a functional piece of hardware, but is also at the heart of the guitar's tonal capabilities.
The Dusk Tiger carries a tailpiece designed by Gibson to provide excellent resonant coupling between strings and body and a sturdy, efficient termination point to enhance tuning stability. This tailpiece is made from Zamak and plated in chrome.
The Dusk Tiger is equipped with two of Gibson’s most popular pickups, a Burst Bucker 3 in the lead (bridge) position, and a P-90h in the rhythm (neck) position, a new hum-canceling update of the traditional P-90 single coil. Both magnetic pickups carry new black plastic covers, which are unique to Dusk Tiger.
The guitar is further equipped with a revolutionary Gibson-designed piezo bridge, which consists of a modified Tune-o-matic-style bridge loaded with individual piezo pickups for each of its string saddles.
Gibson’s Burst Bucker 3 uses a rough Alnico 2 bar magnet, while the P-90h carries two Alnico V bar magnets.
The volume control knobs are chromed knobs with abalone inserts, alongside a master tone control carrying a black speed knob, and an illuminated MCK II knob.
The Dusk Tiger features revolutionary electronics, engineered to deliver unlimited tonal and tuning possibilities.
Master Control Knob
The key to controlling the powerful functions of the Dusk Tiger is the Master Control Knob (MCK II), which controls the brain behind this miraculous instrument and allows you to access both the guitar’s unlimited tonal possibilities and its automatic tuning capabilities.
The MCK II has been completely redesigned for simpler, faster, and more intuitive function, with much improved ergonomics and a sophisticated full color matrix display featuring LEDs and high-tech light pipe technology. These features work to deliver a more powerful and easier to see visual display under any light condition.
In addition to the MCK II's top mounted display, LED-lit symbols now adorn its outer edge, which blend with the color of the knob so that they're only visible when lit. The Dusk Tiger's new MCK II also controls the ability to access preset tone settings, allowing you the ability to adjust tone and tunings automatically and simultaneously, even several times during the same song.
The piezo pickups in the Dusk Tiger's revolutionary bridge go through a studio-quality active amplifier that allows for a stronger and more natural acoustic guitar sound. Combined, the two classic electromagnetic pickups and the piezo bridge pickup are wired in such a way to allow each individual coil to be used in a switching matrix, giving you near-infinite tonal combinations and an incredible array of sonic possibilities.
Active Parametric EQ
The Dusk Tiger also carries two full active four-band parametric EQ networks, one for the magnetic pickups and one for the piezo bridge. These extremely powerful EQ systems can fine tune either or both of the Dusk Tiger’s analog signals to carve out the precise voice needed for your tonal requirements.
Parametric EQ settings can also be included in your saved tone presets, to be recalled instantly right alongside pickup and coil selections.
The Dusk Tiger features a unique, multi-function toggle switch which provides standard switching between the magnetic pickups, plus a revolutionary blend control that is built into its lever, and allows the player to quickly determine the ratio of magnetic to piezo tone in the guitar’s output.
The Dusk Tiger's multi-function output jacks have been totally re-engineered for improved performance and function with a locking Neutrick jack that accepts 1/4" stereo (stereo cord included), 1/4" mono, and XLR. The 1/4" stereo jack provides independent magnetic and piezo signals and allows for the full use of the Robot Interface Pack's (RIP) capabilities. The XLR delivers a balanced mono signal while the 1/4" mono combines the magnetic and piezo signals into one for use with a more traditional mono guitar amplifier.
The Dusk Tiger's vastly improved output jacks also include a built-in active, low-impedance converter comprising Gibson’s new, proprietary LP-Z High Definition Impedance Circuit, designed and named in honor of the late Les Paul’s constant quest for high-definition guitar tone.
Your Dusk Tiger comes protected in a black Gibson hardshell case with 'Dusk Tiger Limited Edition' printed on the outside and tiger stripes inside the top of the case.
