Yamaha MSR400 400w Powered PA Speaker
The Yamaha MSR400 is a decent, lower priced alternative to the popular Mackie SRM450 powered speaker. In terms of specifications & size, the Yamaha is pretty much identical to the Mackie & yet it's currently cheaper(price comparison as of July 2009). In an AB test that we carried out in our PA department, the Mackie did seem to have the edge in terms of volume, but the Yamaha was still a good sounding speaker, with a decent bass end. The Yamaha has an excellent reliabilty track record & as with all Yamaha products, the quality control is very good. If you can afford the extra for the Mackie SRM450's then you'll get a better sounding, slightly louder speaker, but if you want to put the PA system together on a tighter budget, then the Yamaha MSR400's are a long lasting, decent sounding, good choice of powered speaker.
You also get the benfit on the Yamaha system of being able to add the Yamaha MSR800 powered bass bin if you need to do so in the future - not many other powered PA systems make a matching powered bass bin.
Here's what Yamaha say about the MSR400
The new MSR400 is a 400-watt powered loudspeaker built to produce clean, powerful sound in a compact package. Using separate amplifiers for high and low frequencies allows precise control and extended low frequency punch. The sturdy, lightweight enclosure can be used as both a main speaker or on the floor as a wedge-type monitor.
