You'll love this if you're a studio engineer that wants the best sound quality available from your monitors but in a small space. Studio spaces are getting smaller and more people are recording in less than perfect environments. Genelec have been trying to work out the best way to get clear and accurate sound into these environments without making the monitors massive. The Genelec 8351 is their latest speaker in the SAM range that has been designed to fix all of these issues.
We have all had to record in small rooms with glass walls and barely any acoustic treatment. You can't hear what is coming through the speakers clearly so you have no real idea of what you are recording or mixing. So why not invest in a set of monitors that are compact, powerful and can mould to the room you are in. You can control the monitors response using your computer with the Smart Active Monitoring or SAM technology. So matter what kind of room you need to record or mix in you can achieve great sound.
Innovative Genelec Design
Genelec have always been a company that loves to push their technology and design forward. This speaker has a new three way design that utilizes a coaxial tweeter / midrange speaker and two oval shaped woofers that sit above and below the speaker.
With this design you still get the same full range sound you are used to from Genelec speakers but with incredible directional sound. Directional sound is key in any recording situation as it creates a true sweet spot where you are getting perfectly clear and accurate sound. Where with less directional speakers you can end up with a wall of sound that is not as accurate of a representation.
As part of this design you can mount the speaker horizontally or vertically depending on the room you are in. if nearby sidewalls are an issue mount the speakers horizontally for the clearest sound while if floor and ceiling reflections are your biggest issue simply put them up in the standard vertical position.
Big Sound, Small Package
It is thanks to these design innovations that this speaker can be so powerful and full sounding despite being less than 50cm tall and 30cm wide. The two oval woofers are 8 1/2 " x 4" in size and are powered by a 150w power amplifier. The midrange is pushed by a 5" driver and a 120w power amp with a 3/4" tweeter in the middle with a 90w power amp. You can quite easily fill even a relatively large studio with the sound from a pair of these.
The frequency response is also incredible in these speakers going from 32Hz to 40kHz. That is one of the great benefits of having this three way design. Because you have the added midrange driver the tweeter and woofer can each focus on a more specific section of the range and not have to worry about covering the mids as well.
Here's what Genelec say about the 8351A Monitor
The unconventional and delightfully compact 8351A Acoustically Coaxial Smart Active Monitor (SAM) is a revolutionary achievement in three-way monitor design.
The 8351A combines our breakthrough Acoustically Concealed Woofers (ACW) technology together with our Minimum Diffraction Coaxial (MDC) driver and Maximised Directivity Control Waveguide (MaxDCW) to produce controlled directivity over a very wide bandwidth. Genelec Loudspeaker Manager (GLM 2.0) computer control allows for repeatable, consistent performance over flexible proprietary network. Genelec AutoCal measures and automatically align every monitor on the network for level, timing, and equalisation of room response anomalies.
Providing identical performance in both vertical and horizontal orientation, the 8351A delivers outstanding monitoring accuracy for music studios, post-production houses, edit suites, radio, TV and outside broadcast applications.
