The PRS McCarty 594 first showed up as the PRS Private Stock guitar of the month in February 2016. It was an instant hit and PRS were bombarded with emails asking for a core model version. And now PRS have launched the limited edition Soapbar 594 which has p90 pickups instead of the regular humbuckers.
The pickups in the 594 Soapbar are actually Seymour Duncan Antiquities that have been modified to fit into the PRS body and they sound incredible! They offer a bit more bite than the humbuckers do without losing the heft of a humbucking pickup.
The original PRS McCarty launched in 1994 as a guitar that took inspiration from the legendary Ted McCarty who built some of the world's most iconic guitars in the 50's and 60's. He served as a mentor for Paul Reed Smith and helped form some of the great guitars we know them today.
Modified McCarty Build
The McCarty is well known for being a bit bigger than a standard PRS with a thicker back and a fatter, more vintage inspired neck profile. This new version of the PRS McCarty 594 is a little bit different with a new Pattern Vintage neck profile that is as wide as the regular Pattern neck but slightly thicker with an asymmetric carve. This means that up at the treble side you have less neck in the way, while on the bass end you get a bit of chunkier feel.
The big change to the neck comes in the scale length. Previous McCarty models used a 25" or 24.5" scale length. This one is a little bit different at 24.594" which increases string tension ever so slightly over the 24.5" version but still with that 50's single cut kind of response.
Here's what PRS say about the McCarty 594 Soapbar
PRS Guitars is proud to offer the acclaimed McCarty 594 and McCarty Singlecut 594 with PRS/Seymour Duncan Soapbar pickups. McCarty 594 models were designed to rival the best vintage instruments, meticulously spec’d with a 24.594” scale length, Pattern Vintage neck carve, tweaked Phase III locking tuners with modified collars and set screws, and a two-piece zinc bridge.
Soapbars are one of the most classic pickup designs and add another tonal option for players that is at once incredibly familiar and effortlessly playable.
For this PRS/Seymour Duncan collaboration, we started with the Seymour Duncan Antiquity P90 for its sweet, vintage growl and cool, gritty sparkle. However, we modified the pickup slightly so it sits at the proper height in our cavity design. Like with original Antiquity pickups, chords sound full and round, while single notes sing sweetly. A relatively low output pickup, these soapbars have a many usable voicings by simply adjusting your volume and tone controls.
