From blues to funk, surf rock to indie rock, the G&L Doheny can do it all. This limited edition model takes the surf aesthetic to another level with its hand-painted hula artwork. Limited to just 30 pieces worldwide, this Doheny pairs its bright, versatile tone with a look that's sure to be a conversation starter.
The artwork on this Doheny has been "freehand" painted by CLee Sobieski, an artist who specialises in retro American and Tiki art, so each model in the 30-piece run is unique.
The Doheny has an alder, offset body that has a stylish retro look but is also comfortable to play. The body is paired with a hard-rock maple neck and matching maple fingerboard with a 9.5 inch radius. The maple provides a smooth playing surface and the slightly curved radius makes fretting chords a breeze without making it difficult to bend notes and solo.
The bridge is a Leo Fender-designed Dual Fulcrum vibrato that has a smoother action than the traditional six-screw S-type design. On the other end of the guitar is the 100% bone nut, a traditional material that's regarded for its sustain and tuning stability, useful qualities to have on a vibrato-equipped guitar.
Pickups and Electronics
At the heart of the Doheny are the dual Magnetic Field Design (MFD) jazz single-coil pickups. MFD is a Leo Fender design that uses ceramic magnets (rather than the traditional Alnico designs) and features individual adjustable pole pieces so you can fine-tune the output of each string. MFD pickups have a warmer sound with a wide frequency response, however these jazz-type single-coils retain that brightness and chime that pickups of this style are known for. The clean sounds are great for blues, funk, country, and surf, but when you turn up the gain these pickups can really bite making them perfect for rock and alternative styles.
The Doheny features the G&L "Passive Treble and Bass" (PTB) tone circuit. On most guitars a tone control will cut treble frequencies, which gives you some nice sounds but is fairly limited. The PTB tone circuit gives you two tone controls that apply to both pickups, one for cutting treble frequencies, and one for cutting bass frequencies giving you more precise control over your sound.
