What's new with Ableton Live 10?

The latest version of the Ableton DAW has been in the pipeline for a long time - now that it's finally out, it's clear to see why! The brains behind the operation made a conscious effort to listen to their user community, and the changes they've made are all with the needs of the user in mind.

New Instruments & Effects

  • Wavetable - this two-oscillator instrument can be tweaked and contorted to almost no end. Based on classic wave synthesizers of the '80s, the idea is to take a waveform and apply analog-style filters to mould your sound and take your creativity to the next level; evolving pads, punchy percussive leads, echoing sound effects and everything in between. Expect endless modulation, a multitude of filtering options, ambience effects, and of course full compatibility with Ableton's Push controller - Wavetable is a truly formidable addition to your arsenal!
  • Drum Buss - as the name might suggest, this is an all-in-one tool for taking your drum and percussion parts to the next level. Whether you're looking to add a little extra punch to your drum kit, or warp a sampled loop beyond recognition, Drum Buss ticks all of the boxes, with EQ, distortion, vast compression options and much more!
  • Echo - a stereo delay plugin that transcends the ambience category. It can be used to weave intricate rhythmic parts, 3D soundscapes, abstract pitch-shifted textures and much more. If you've been playing with the same instrument and you're looking to give it a new lease of life, you're bound to find something amongst Echo's wealth of features that'll suit your needs!
  • Pedal - a selection of cool, intuitive effects modelled on some of the most crucial guitar stompboxes of all time. This includes overdrive, distortion and fuzz options with carefully-crafted tones to match individual types of circuitry. You might be after a tight tubescreamer sound, or a full-tilt muff-style fuzz - either way, Pedal has got you covered!

Enhanced Interface

  • You can now create groups within existing groups - ideal for more detailed mixes that require multiple signal chains and complex automation.
  • Capture recalls an idea immediately after it's been played, converting it into a fully-fledged MIDI part.
  • Edit two or more MIDI clips at the same time using one detail view - this allows for more flexibility when working with harmonised parts or intricate beats.
  • The flow of several key areas has been overhauled and improved, including the arrangement window, browser collections, I/O screen and much more.

Improved Push Compatibility

  • MIDI note view now allows navigation and refinement of a selection of notes in the same pattern as shown on the Push display.
  • A brand new step sequencing layout allows note sequencing and real-time playing at the same time.
  • Improved visualization with more feedback of key Live devices including Wavetable, Echo, EQ Eight and Compressor.
  • Workflow improvements to layouts, building and extending patterns, track arming and more.

New Sound Library Features

  • Specially curated collections tie themed samples and ideas together for easy navigation and implementation - find the style and sound you're after with ease!
  • Four new essential instruments include synths, and multi-sampled electric keys and drums.
  • Live 10’s Core Library gets a sonic upgrade with richer, more detailed sounds

Improvements to Live features

  • Better integration with Live 10 Suite allows quicker loading of devices with less CPU requirements and feel more like Live’s native devices.
  • Improved Drum Synth sounds, with better modulation, device mapping more.
  • Multi-channel audio routing means mixing using multi-channel speaker setups is now possible.
