About Meris

Meris are a boutique guitar pedal company at the forefront of artistic sound design.

The Californian-based brand consists of three tonal masterminds behind the direction of their incredible pedals: Angelo Mazzocco, a DSP engineer; Jinna Kim, creative director and Terry Burton, founder and engineer.

They treat each of their pedals as individual instruments, equipping them with a deep and expansive sets of parameters. You can shape the sound from your Meris pedal into something completely unique to your style.

Sound & Controls

Meris Engineer Angelo says: “From Wendy Carlos to Tomita to Chick Corea, I have always admired the spectrum of sculpting tools available to synthesists.  I worked restlessly to squeeze a wall of interconnected modules into the Enzo so that you can both find your own voice and lose yourself inside a halo of sound.”

As with all Meris pedals, the Enzo has two layers of controls. Access Pitch in half step increments, filter the frequencies and blend the guitar signal with the wet Enzo signal.

Filter Envelope adjusts the behaviour – either aggressive or in smooth swells, while Sustain sets how long the sound lingers after playing. There’s a whole host of modulation effect built into the Enzo.

The Modulation knob creates warbles, dissonance and grit. Holding down the Alt buttons grants access to an expansive list of chorus, tremolo, delay, arpeggio, ring modulator effects and waveform selection. The filter dials take on even deeper high pass and bandwidth choices.

Pick the overarching thematic sound from the Enzo with the Synth Mode, either in multi-voice, monophonic or arpegiattor patterns. Disable it altogether and use the parameters to alter your dry guitar signal.

Connectivity & Utility

Meris are at the forefront of pedal design, incorporating MIDI into the control system. This is the best way to get the most out of your effects. Built into the pedal are 16 MIDI presets for you to experiment with your sound seamlessly in preparation.

Get accurate tap tempo with the MIDI beat clock synchronization and selectable max feedback and envelope follower when holding down the tap tempo footswitch.

The pedal is equipped with stereo ins and outs for panning effects. Great for live use with PA systems, multiple cab setups, drum machines or sequencers. There’s also a switchable output headroom level to accommodate for guitars, synths or to keep at line level.

Sonically this is incredible. I would say the permutations of sounds are almost infinite and it is way more than just a synth pedal because of the alt-functions. Functionally I think it has a few issues. For a pedal that costs over 300 quid to not have any ability to save presets without having to buy a separate MIDI preset switch (>£100) is poor, especially as it's quite hard to reproduce sounds because the standard and alt-functions are on the same dial and it's hard to know where each is at. It also feels quite flimsy. Although it has a metal enclosure, it feels light and like it wouldn't survive a drop. There are also gaps in the enclosure through which you can see the electronics, so it is definitely not fluid proof. It feels more like a studio tool. It requires a lot of time to understand how to get the most from it and it's easy to make it sound like garbage, so this is definitely a pedal for the tweekers out there.
