It was a bit darker than the ad showed but it played great out of the box and the neck feels great in my hands.

Just from the looks alone, this instrument is an absolute stunner! The poplar burl top means you get a unique pattern on each guitar, but the blue/green 'rainstorm' finish just sets this off to perfection. This is a true baritone at 28" scale length, which is long enough to be noticeable, but not prohibitively long to make playing it uncomfortable. The guitar might be designed with metal and progressive players in mind, but there is enough tonal flexibility in there to appeal to more than just that. Loaded with Seymour Duncan's tried and tested Pegasus and Sentient set, you certainly have the power and definition there if needed, but the 3 way selector and coil tap option open up some lovely ambient tones as well as the percussive, rhythmic twang elements if so desired. The neck is smooth as silk, and the ebony board provides a suitably solid response, and has rolled edges for that instant comfort factor. This is a lot of guitar for the money! Fantastic to play and sounds amazing!

The color and gloss finish is fine for the price range. They didn't do as well on the fret edges, I have had better feeling fret edges on cheaper guitars than this. I will have a luthier smooth the fret edges, or trade it for a PRS 277.

The ML1 Modern Baritone is an amazing guitar, it sounds surprisingly bright even when tuned down to F# standard, I'll list some pros and cons below, however I'm trying to intentionally be a bit harsher on the review since most reviews don't do much more than gush. Pros: Fretwork is great. Stays in tune incredibly well. The pickups have so much range of tones, from super bright leads on the bridge, to full warm tones with the neck. Typically I've had to pick the warm or the bright but on this guitar I got both. Guitar looks and plays great, Its an incredible value that could have easily went for a few hundred more and still held up. Cons: The guitar comes with the nut filed for a .060-.010 when it's practically built to handle lower tunings. If Chapman had sent this guitar with a .074-.013 setup that would have been preferred. The finish leaves a bit to be desired, don't get me wrong, its clean and looks nice, but the flat top and woodgrain doesn't quite pop, and it leaves the finish looking a bit flat. As for the color, It looks quite a bit darker in person than in the photos, not quite as vibrant. Had the finish been a bit lighter, with an archtop and it would have been perfect. Overall I would definitely pick this guitar over other options, its a great guitar for an incredible value. If I could have given it a 4.5 I would have, but I feel that a 5 isn't quite warranted.
