Basswood is a timber typically sourced in the USA, known for its light feel, tight grain and soft texture. Although Basswood is employed by dozens of guitar brands all over the world, its use in instrument-building remains a divisive topic among players. Some see it as a cheap material that is both too soft and lacking in tone, while others consider it a versatile tonewood that ensures a full sound with rich mid-range warmth.

Despite its critics, companies have continued to use Basswood for constructing both entry-level and premium electric guitars. Basswood isn't considered stable enough for constructing necks, which is why it's commonly used for making guitar bodies. The light grain on Basswood means that most manufacturers will paint over the wood rather than leave a natural finish, or glue a top/veneer onto it for a nicer aesthetic.

Metal-centric guitar companies like Ibanez, Jackson, EVH and Schecter have a preference for Basswood over other materials. Its neutral tonal characteristics means that it serves as an ideal foundation for high-output humbuckers.
