When the Yamaha THR10 Guitar Amp hit the market last year it was seen a real breakthrough for people wanting great tone at low volume for desktop use. If the original THR10 was a one size fits all model the new Yamaha THR5A Guitar amp is designed and optimised to work with Electro Acoustic Guitars. You might be wondering what 5 watts of Amplification to an acoustic guitar will actually do, surely if you play really loud you could drown this thing out?

The Yamaha THR5A is all about Acoustic Tone, its about getting the studio acoustic sound whereever you are. With a choice of microphone emulations you can get a variety of different flavours to your playing and with the option of dialling in reverb, chorus, compression and others you get a much broader sonic plane than just playing your guitar.

The Yamaha THR5A also works great as a recording interface and an ipod dock (or anything with a 3.5mm jack) Yamaha refer to this as your "Third" Amp but we feel it would also work great as your First, Second, Fourth or Fifth Amp.

Watch our World Exclusive Videos to hear what this amp can offer.

Here is what Yamaha say about the THR5A

It’s not a stage amp, but it’s not a practice amp either. THR is something totally new – the amp for everywhere you play that isn’t on stage. Designed from the ground-up to be the perfect amp for the way guitarists really play when they’re not playing live, THR-toting guitarists are joining the tone revolution and rewriting the rules on how your guitar should sound away from the stage.

But what if you like the THR concept but want it more specialized, with even more focus, to get the perfect sound for you? What if you’re a real tone-hound and already know your sound down to the smallest detail, but are constantly on the search for that tiny detail, that certain ‘something’ to perfect it everywhere youplay? What if there was a THR that was dialed in to a specific tonal direction, a THR that was focused on
the subtleties of tone and dynamics between amps that are similar in most people’s eyes but are worlds apart in the eyes of the experienced?

Get ready to spend even more time playing guitar. You’re going to like this…

THR5A is optimized for use with electric-acoustic and Silent Guitars. Utilising advanced modeling technologies developed by Yamaha, THR5A offers simulations of classic tube condenser and dynamic mics combined with studio-grade effects to create recording-studio tone direct from your guitar and wherever you are.
The only time most electric-acoustic guitars get plugged-in is when they’re on-stage. But by matching your guitar with THR5A the expressive tone of a studio-mic’d acoustic together with incredible effects will unlock more creative expression than ever before for the ultimate practice, writing or recording experience.

THR5A features mic types perfectly tailored for steel-string and nylon-string guitars, together with a natural, clean amp model for electric guitar.
CONDENSER: The condenser microphone setting gives the acoustic guitar a rich, midrange tone.
DYNAMIC: The dynamic microphone setting gives the acoustic guitar a tight tonal core.
TUBE: The tube microphone setting gives the acoustic guitar a rich midrange tone.
NYLON: Perfect for use with an acousticelectric classical or nylon string guitar.
EG CLN: Classic American clean tube amp – low gain preamp, 6L6 power section and 12-inch speaker with clear, late breakup

Lovely little amp that sounds way bigger than expected. Will live in the kitchen diner to let my play (Yamaha Silent Classical) while I wait for dinner to emerge from the oven.

Using this with electro acoustic nylon strung guitar produces excellent results. My only gripe is that rechargeable batteries don't work unless they're eneloop type, this wasn't made clear pre-purchase.

Yamaha THR5 amplifier does not work well and keeps switching off when using batteries for power or when connecting it through the USB cable. It is quite a frustrating experience from a renowned Japanese company product. Power only stays on in the amp connecting it directly through the mains using the adaptor provided.
