Ultimate Guide to Sire Basses

A fairly new name in the bass game, Sire produce high-quality instruments which suit both the beginner and professional alike. The sheer amount of models on offer can take a little while to get your head around though. With this guide, we've aimed to make things simple, helping you to ultimately choose the bass that's right for you!

Who Are Sire?

Sire are quickly developing a reputation as one of the most popular, respected, and widely adopted bass manufacturers in the entire industry. Through a collaboration with bass virtuoso Marcus Miller, the brand have created an extensive range of highly-playable instruments which deliver optimum levels of performance and premium features, yet remain incredibly affordable.

From their own factory, Sire produce bass guitars which rival their pricier, American-made counterparts. Owning their own premises allows for intensive quality-control at every single stage of the design and build process (unlike many other companies, who are forced to outsource their work). As a result, their products more than hold their own in the looks, sound and feel departments.

There's really a bass here for everyone. Their take on the P-Bass and J-bass offer something for traditionalists, while their unique M-Bass is slightly more modern. Their U series signals a first step into the world of short scale basses too! That's without even discussing the amount of variation on show; 4-string; 5-string; 6-string; fretless; left-handed; alder bodies; swamp ash bodies; there's a model available suitable for just about every conceivable way of playing bass. Over 250 different kinds, in fact.

Who is Marcus Miller?

Marcus Miller's achievements and accolades are extremely impressive, that's for sure. A two-time grammy award winner, Marcus has lent his truly individual tone to hit records from the likes of Eric Clapton, Elton John, Aretha Franklin and Bill Wither's. And that's just a smattering of the heavyweight artists he's worked with. With an impressive technical, yet soulful style, Marcus is widely regarded as one of the most influential players to ever pick up a bass.

The Captain Meets Marcus Miller

It was therefore a no-brainer for Sire to pair up with him. With the companies engineering expertise and Marcus' deep knowledge and experience, this partnership has seen the brand absolutely thrive, creating basses that suit the needs and demands of not only Marcus himself, but the most discerning modern day players too. Just like Marcus said, "to put my name on, it had to be perfect". If that isn't an endorsement of the quality of these instruments, we really don't know what is!

Sire P Series Basses

The Sire P Series is characterised by an immediately recognisable symmetrical body, featuring a split single coil in the neck and a single coil pickup in the bridge. This results in that classic P-type tone that you've come to know and love. As a result of their wood and pickups, they deliver a warm mid-range with enhanced levels of sustain supplied by a heavy-mass bridge.

About the Sire Version 2 Marcus Miller P7 Basses

Boasting a P/J configuration, you've got yourself the best of both worlds combined and packaged together in one brilliant bass. These pickups have been redesigned from the ground up to provide a high-res sound which is far clearer than its earlier Version 1 predecessor. When coupled with Sires renowned active preamp, the result is a responsive and open-sounding instrument.

A maple neck with an ebony fingerboard has been incorporated to create a comfortable, smooth playing experience. A 9.5-inch fingerboard radius makes fretting notes simple, while the matte finish on the back of the neck allows you to move along it quickly and precisely.

Significant variation in the range comes in the form of models made using two different types of body wood - swamp ash and alder. Alder is known for its lightweight nature and is often recognised as the most well-balanced tonewood available. This rounded sound is full-bodied, with an enhanced upper mid-range. Swamp ash is also light, but is known for being incredibly resonant over the complete frequency spectrum. It contains scooped mids, leading to a brighter sound. You'll also find a more distinct top-end, a sensitive dynamic range and faster attack. Ultimately, your choice all depends on the overall sound you're looking for.

Sire U Series Short-Scale Basses

The U Series is Sire's first foray into the world of short-scale basses. Combining comfort, power (and of course, a shorter scale length) these instruments have become extremely popular over the last few years. A reduced scale length leads to a lower string tension - making it much simpler to fret and bend notes.

This simple ease of use means they're equally perfect, whether you're a beginner searching for an appropriate first bass, or an experienced player requiring an alternative addition to your bass arsenal. The smaller scale benefits your tone in a number of ways too. As the strings are both shorter and looser, you'll find far less high-end frequencies; this leads to a punchier, more pronounced lower-end.

About the Sire Version 2 Marcus Miller U5 Short-Scale Basses

The U5 in particular features the very same above characteristics. Boasting a P/J pickup configuration, you get the best of both worlds here. The J-bass bridge pickup offers bite, is tighter and far more articulate; the P-bass split-coil middle pickup is well-rounded, with bucket-loads of old-school warmth. You can blend and swap between the two, allowing you to craft a wide range of contrasting tones which can be applied to many different genres and styles. These are combined with a playable maple neck and fretboard, alongside a lightweight alder body.

Sire Fretless Basses

A fretless bass is regarded as a specialist instrument within the bass playing community. They're harder to play than their more traditional cousins and usually cost a bit more. However, when it comes to Sire, the brand aims to turn these preconceived perceptions on their heads.

The fretless range projects the very same punch, power and clarity as the fretted alternatives, yet delivers a silky smooth feel and response that only a fretless bass can offer. Across a bunch of the different Sire series', you'll find a faultless fretless variant available.
