Product Description

When it was introduced in the 1960s, the Firebird shattered preconceptions of the electric guitar. Inspired by the iconic tailfins and alluring curves of American automobiles of the time, it's earned its place in Rock 'n' Roll history. Gibson have made a number of design tweaks since then, but this remains close to the timeless Firebird formula.

Body & Neck

The body is, naturally, solid Mahogany. As you've come to expect from Gibson solid-bodies, this means luxurious resonance and a hefty low-end emphasis. The curved body shape is as striking as ever, but while it may appear cumbersome, it's surprisingly ergonomic. The Firebird is easy to handle, sitting or standing, making it a very playable instrument - whatever your style.

The neck continues the Mahogany theme for excellent resonance, but is combined with Walnut with a 9-ply build. A familiar 24.75" scale length and Slim Taper profile makes it an easy fit for any player, too.

One of the most notable tweaks in the Gibson range, however, is the return of Rosewood fretboards. Gibson have explored the use of Granadillo, Pau Ferro and other Rosewood substitutes over the years - but nothing compares to the original! Gibson have also taken it back to the old-school with Acrylic Trapezoid inlays - the classic USA offset look.

Pickups & Electronics

A double-barrel combo of mini humbuckers offers the perfect balance between bite and weight. The humbucking design allows for the Mahogany to truly sing, while their smaller size means extra snappiness, clarity and midrange projection.

As per the usual Firebird configuration, two volumes and two tone controls allow plenty of legroom for you to get comfy with your tone.

Hardware

Next up, they've combined the aluminium stopbar with the Nashville Tune-O-Matic bridge - this is the tried-and-tested Gibson solid-body formula. Understated in look but efficient and hardy in functionality. Aluminium also boasts surprising resonant qualities, so you get even more sustain to boot.

Recent Firebirds have had black pickguards, but this model marks a return to the classic White 3-ply that's right up against the pickups. Combine with Black top-hat knobs and a gnarly Firebird logo, and you've struck Gibson Gold - this thing oozes attitude!

Great guitar, sounds wonderful and has a lovely finish. It's well balanced, with no neck heaviness (unlike some Firebirds I've tried in the past). Great upper fret access but the Firebird design does move the far end of the neck away from you by a couple of inches and encourage you to play higher up the neck. I really like the hex-key height adjustment on the bridge. Just remember that you can't use it with a standard guitar stand, so also budget for something like a Hercules GS412B which hangs the guitar by the neck. However; it is let down by a poor factory set-up. Even with the bridge set as low as it could go, I still couldn't get the action low enough on the treble side. I had to straighten the neck by about half a turn of the truss rod in order to get the strings pulled down low enough (without creating a back-bow), then cut the nut slots lower (they were very high) and even then I had to notch the saddles a bit deeper to get the action to a condition I could live with. Even then, it's the highest action Gibson that I've got (and I've got 5 of various types and costs). This is possibly due to Gibson using inserts for the bridge posts (which don't allow the bridge to go as low as the original ABR-1 with posts that screw directly into the body), or maybe the bridge angle has changed slightly (it's a through-neck guitar, so a neck reset isn't possible). A friend's son has a 2017 model with the same bridge, and that's fine. Maybe the current models are using a thinner rosewood board (rosewood re-introduced in 2019) than before which makes things worse. The 2017 model description talked about a 'thicker' board. So, basically a great guitar waiting to get out, but be prepared to get it set-up. I've got the equipment and experience to do this myself, but you'll probably need this done by someone else (unless you are into playing slide guitar).
