Product Description

PRS have announced the brand new S2 Studio to add to their lineup. This guitar is based on the S2 Standard with it’s Mahogany body, 22 frets and body shape but features an interesting pickup configuration.

The pickup config is HSS which is a popular tried and tested formula but the S2 Studio has the Starla bridge pickup which has a TV Jones-esque mid-range. It sounds great under a bit of gain and retains plenty of clarity but isn’t what you’d call a ‘powerful’ humbucker metal pickup. Though it definitely has a bit of a kick when you crank the volume up!

You’ve then got a Type-D Singlecoil pickup in the middle and neck position. These pickups were used in the PRS Vela and proved to be an absolute hit. They’ve got the chime and brightness of a singlecoil with bass response in spades. Perfect for rhythm players or anyone after that S-type sound.

Lastly, you’ve got a PRS classic tremolo to give you an incredibly versatile instrument that truly can handle any style of music thrown at it. With the 5-way selector and all of those pickup sounds at your fingertips, this could easily be your ‘desert island’ guitar.

Here's what PRS say about the S2 Studio

The S2 Studio takes the Standard 22 platform into new sonic territory with a single/single/hum pickup configuration and updated switching system.

This versatile setup allows for a whole new scope of sounds that are only possible with a three pickup guitar, whether you’re looking for punchy singlecoils, vintage scooped tones, or the chunky kick of a bridge humbucker (that can still be split to singlecoils via the push/pull tone knob for a three single coil set up).

With seven combinations in all, the S2 Studio covers classic tones but maintains a unique voice making it a perfect “desert island” guitar.

Amazing guitar, I really enjoyed it especially the versatility. No thanks to the poor upkeep by the store, but the guitar itself is especially sweet and comfortable to play.

It was definitely worth the wait and arrived cosmetically faultless. The setup from the factory was even decent although I personally prefer action that is low but doesn't cause fret buzz when playing unplugged (action was a hair too low). The bridge is also stiff enough to not de-tune the guitar unintentionally when playing. The trem arm is quite hard to push in and has a lot of play which I am not sure whether is normal (I don't use it much). Tuning stability is good for a guitar with a floating bridge. The pick guard really stands out in person, the pictures really do not do this guitar justice! It gives off a real vintage vibe, you can tell the designer thought about everything from the finish to the strap buttons. I love the way the pickups look and they are fairly low output giving a more vintage sound. They are quite bright and versatile although I don't think you would get away with playing all types of genres. Hope this helps anyone on the fence about this one!
