The PRS Custom 22 is the same classic design as the revered Custom 24, but with 22 frets as the name suggests. Despite its similarities, the Custom 22 is its own instrument with a distinctive sound. Much like the rest of the guitars coming out of their Maryland, USA factory, this instrument is a work of art that plays just as beautifully.
Body & Neck
The Custom 22 has a Mahogany back and a glued-in Mahogany neck. This classic combination famously provides guitars with a warm tonality and increased sustain. The addition of a Maple top adds both top-end brightness and an eye-popping aesthetic.
The advantage of fewer frets is that the bridge gets moved back slightly and thus the pickups become further apart. This gives a wider tonal range and has the added benefit of slightly more warmth in the neck pickup due to its new position closer to the centre of the scale
The neck profile on this Custom 22 is “Pattern” which recreates the neck Paul Reed Smith himself made for guitarists such as Carlos Santana and Peter Frampton before PRS became a factory operation. The Pattern neck feels wide and fat, fitting comfortably in the hand. Rosewood is used for the fingerboard on this guitar, offering a smooth and natural playing feel and a touch of tonal warmth.
Electronics & Hardware
The pickups are truly the engine of a guitar and the dual 85/15 humbuckers inside this Custom 22 do not disappoint. The 85/15s are appropriately named as they take the design of PRS’ original humbuckers from 1985 and update them with the 30 years of experience PRS have accumulated since. These pickups have a clear and emphasised high-midrange and low end with a thick tone that makes these humbuckers impressively versatile.
Straightforward controls make this guitar a breeze to play: one volume knob, one tone knob, and a 5-way selector switch. That’s it. The 5-way switch gives you your full humbucker tones in positions 1, 3, and 5; however, positions 2 and 4 will pair a coil split with the chosen humbucker for some extra brightness and articulation.
The PRS-designed Gen III tremolo system has a resonant brass bridge which beautifully balances sustain, stability, and tone and gives you the option to throw subtle-to-mid-level pitch bending into your playing. The addition of Phase 3 locking tuners is the perfect complement to the Gen III trem as they give the Custom 22 that extra stability that you'll appreciate if you're a fan of soaring bends.
