The Voodoo is back! Back in the early 2000's Gibson launched a range of guitars called the Voodoo series. These guitars were hot rodded Les Pauls that featured black and red colour schemes and very, very hot passive humbucking pickups. If you were a metal player that wanted a Les Paul it was the one you went for. Now Gibson have brought it back as part of this limited edition run.
Interesting Build
Even though it is a Les Paul there quite a few drastic differences between this and your normal Les Paul. Starting off the body is actually made completely out of Swamp Ash. This is much lighter and a lot more open than Mahogany giving it a brighter tone and tight attack that suits so many more aggressive styles.
The neck is made out of Maple which is a bit different as well, making the neck a bit stronger at a slimmer size. This is the chosen material for most metal players as the high end response is accented and you get a really smooth action along with the Richlite fretboard so high speed playing is never limited by the guitar.
Voodoo Pickups
The pickups in this guitar have been exclusive to the Voodoo line through all of these years. They are hot, they are aggressive and they are made from the ground up for all out high gain metal. These overwound double slug pickups with Alnico II magnets still have a lot of the classic Les Paul character but with an emphasis on how that works when turned up to 11. These may not be what you use for blues or rock but if you are looking for heavy metal these are a great set of pickups to use.
