Product Description

The ES-335 model is one of the most recognisable in Gibson’s iconic instrument range. Considered by many as the quintessential semi-hollow guitar, this beautiful Custom Shop 1959 VOS model recaptures the essence of these timeless instruments.

Sure to appeal to traditionalists, the Gibson Custom Shop 1959 ES-335 has many time-honoured features, including an old-school VOS nitrocellulose lacquer finish.

Construction

The ES-335 is regarded for its elegant semi-hollow body, which allows you to achieve bright and open sounds with plenty of natural acoustic-like volume. Formed from a 3-ply Maple/Poplar combination, these tonewoods give this guitar plenty of vibrancy and top-end definition. The Vintage Petrina nitro VOS finish is the pinnacle of aged Gibson semi-hollows – slick aged looks, smooth feel and resonant sound all in one.

To add some warmth, the ES-335's body is paired with a solid Mahogany neck; topped with an Indian Rosewood fingerboard for a silky feel under the fingers, complete with hide glue fit. The neck adheres to Gibson's ’59 medium C profile, offering just the right amount of grip that’ll keep both traditionalists and contemporary players happy.

Electronics & Hardware

A double-dose of medium-output Alnico III Custombuckers offer a balanced, warm tone with a beautifully dynamic break-up. Although semi-hollow guitars are more synonymous with jazz players, with distortion these humbuckers can get raunchy in no time.

Next up, the ’59 335 VOS comes installed with an ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic bridge, providing a stable and solid feel under the picking hand. With its simple and accessible design making it easy to adjust your action and intonation, you can easily manipulate your setup on-the-fly. Fitted with nickel-plated brass saddles, their traditional-style design yields greater sustain and top-end sparkle.

Zero regrets. I think the overall choice to select from the biggest headache as there were quality options left, right and centre

I am fortunate to be familiar with custom shop 335/345s. In the grand scheme this latest incarnation stands up very credibly. Nice light weight package, realistic sounding pickups, to my ear, they sound relaxed and already worn in. Neck appears an appropriate and well specified choice. Finish is subdued quality, by that it looks realistic for a '59 repro. Neck has a couple of very minor marks which I presume are part of the ageing spec.and they are smoothing out very rapidly with playing. The strings feel interesting-like Di Addario XLs!. Previous vintage reissues did not feel this flexible? However I will eventually revert to my favoured Pyramid pure-nickel round cores. A personal but I feel appropriate choice. Overall very pleased. I had hung my nose over your previous batch and watched them all go! I'm glad I made the choice to plunge in this time.If this is what the new management at Gibson are producing I look forward to being around for many more years. Sincere thanks, AER

Mr. Ivo Rodrigues25th Nov 2020

Looks and feels like an old, but very well preserved guitar. Careful with the VSO finish, it varies a lot from one guitar to another. Gibson may claim that all the finish flaws are attempts to recreate the original finishes so it's up to you if you can accept that or not. Thanks to Andertons amazing service I got one that is closer to NOS than VSO so I'm very happy. Acoustically the guitar is amazing, great sustain and note separation. When you plug in, note that these current alnico III custom buckers are VERY low output, so you may love it or you may end up swapping pickups on an custom shop historic guitar (not nice). The neck is wonderful, the 59 profile on these guitars is exactly what I expected, I measured it myself and it's 0.9 1st fret and 0.99 12th fret. I had a 58 from Memphis and the build quality of Nashville is miles away (much better) from the old factory. Value for money is saying average because there is nothing that can justify this guitar costing double the price from a Gibson USA one. I bought it because I wanted the full fat 59 spec and you can only have that from custom shop. But paying double the price for it is mostly marketing, not labout or quality. If they did this exact guitar on Gibson USA and put a 500-1000£ overhead in price, they would loose a lot of custom shop clients for sure (me included).

Custom shop historic ... as close to the real thing as I'm ever likely to get. A work of art with killer sound - everything I had hoped for and more - one happy punter.
