Product Description

The Morgan AC20 is a deceptively simple 20w handwired British AC style amplifier that perfectly captures that classic 60's tone in a small and portable combo. Morgan is well known for his simple looking but great sounding amps that are some of the best clean and mid crunch tone makers you can find.

Simple But Powerful

Looking at the front of the amp you may think that it is 'too simple' and won't give you the range of tones that you need. Actually you can do a lot with just the three knobs and two switches on the front panel. The Volume control is of course your volume, but the rest of the amp is a little cryptic. The Cut control is your EQ, it acts as a high cut but in the power section rather than the preamp meaning it responds in a very different way, but while still giving you a lot of range. Match that up with the bright switch and the bass cut switch and you have loads of different options to shape the tone.

Power Control

This is where things get really interesting. While most amps have a master volume control what it does is limit the signal going in to the power amp valves which drastically changes the tone and lower volumes and means that overdrive pedals just don't sound good bellow midday. This amp is drastically different as the Power control doesn't effect how hard the power amp tubes are working and instead limits the output after the power amp stage. This means you can get the same great tone at every volume level without the need of an aftermarket attenuator.

Here's what Morgan say about the AC20 Combo

Similar to its big brother, the Morgan AC20 is a deceptively simple hand wired in the USA, all-tube, 1x12" combo that is capable of producing a myriad of early 60s British AC tones - but that is just the beginning. The included power level control allows you to dial in just the right amount of volume without sacrificing your tone the way some master volumes do.

Plugging into the AC20 and you will instantly notice the familiar chime and compression of the Class A EL84 driven output section. Instantly U2, Tom Petty, Queen and most of praise and worship tones will be right there at your fingertips. Like all Morgan amps the AC20 was designed with the pedalboard player in mind. This amp loves all pedals and was designed in a matter where even modulation pedals like reverb and delay sound best in front of the amp. The amplifier's extreme touch-sensitivity will allow you to coax clean tones even at the highest of gain settings. To quote Keith Armstrong (Chief Engineer at Mix LA) "It is impossible to get a bad sound out of this amp!"

At the heart of the AC-20 combo is a 16-ohm, 12" Celestion G12H75 Creamback speaker that delivers the delivers the perfect blend of midrange tones that will allow you to cut through any mix. We load this speaker into a void less Baltic birch ply cab that utilizes  a fixed baffle to transfer the speaker energy to the entire cabinet. You will be amazed at the amount of bass from this cab, To finish it off wrap the cab in our twilight finish, a proprietary custom ballistic vinyl covering that is vulcanized to the wood to ensure long lasting durability.

The Power Level control is a big part of the magic of the AC-20. Most guitarists today have spent large sums of money and even more amounts of time working on their pedal boards. Most pedals are not designed to be used with a tube amp on "1". They were designed to interact with the amplifier at or near the point at which it begins to break up. That is why an overdrive pedal is called an "over" drive. It is driving the amp over that point. Unfortunately that volume can be too loud for most live applications. The Power Level control on the AC20 solves this. Think of conventional master volumes as a spigot on a garden hose, they choke off the signal to the power section of the amp to a usable level. Most conventional master volumes also affect the way your pedals interact with your amp. The Power Level control behaves like a zoom lens. It limits the size of the output signal that can be produced by the output tubes. It does NOT choke the signal down and therefore behaves identical as if the amp were running at full volume. This means that you can choose the power that you need, anything from 1/4 of a watt to 20 watts.

Morgan History:

Joe Morgan has been building, modifying and repairing amplifiers since 1996. His designs are seen in stadiums and arenas all over the world. It is hard to turn on a music awards show without seeing his products. Joe designs for the working musician, whether that means a Sunday morning church gig or touring the world with James Taylor.

Joe will be the first to tell you that tube amps are not rocket science (Joe was part of the engineering team that developed the first GPS satellites). Tube amps are only as good as their components and Morgan chooses the best of the best. Engineered with custom designed transformers to provide the best possible sonic signature they also provide Morgan with the confidence to offer a limited lifetime warranty.
