Oscillation galore

By combining 32 virtual analog oscillators into 4 voices, Modal have created a synthesizer that somehow combines affordability, compact design and absolutely killer tone. Whether you’re after resonant monophonic leads, detuned ambient patches or anything between, the Skulpt is locked and loaded.

With in-depth tuning/detuning, comprehensive modulation and full-fat envelope generators (just a handful of features), the Skulpt is – as the name suggests – totally customisable in its sound. Its eye-popping interface is surprisingly easy to get to grips with, making the endless options that little bit more enjoyable!

Experiment, perform & record on the go

Did we mention that this thing is pretty tiny? It’s designed to fit onto any desk space and into any carry case or rucksack. Thanks to MIDI, USB and sync in/out compatibility, it’s also built to slot seamlessly into your existing rig – Eurorack? Digital workstation? Ableton Live? No sweat.

A built-in sequencer and arpeggiator allows you to set this thing loose while you found your sound, making experimentation that little bit easier. Top it off with a handy protective lid that can be flipped to raise the Skulpt, and it’s starting to sound like Modal have thought of everything!

Considering I got this “virtual analogue” 4-voice polysynth from Anderton’s for around £150, I think I can overlook the somewhat plasticky feel and extraordinary lack of Heft(on Blumenthal). I’m still getting the hang of it all—particularly the sequencer and arp, but some of the presets are quite lovely, and respond nicely to filter sweeps etc. I do find the bright orange LEDs rather bright, and they can make it hard to read the labels, so I have a music stand light directly overhead so I can see what I’m doing. Also, it’s much nicer if you have a separate MIDI keyboard.

This modal synth us so good it's price is insane, it really does sound like a £1500 synth not one for £149 is what I paid, do not underestimate how good the skulpt is its amazing even next to my other more expensive synths, I really want another cause if that's what 4 voices sound like imagine 8 voices, 2 units together. Don't be put off that it's virtual analogue it doesn't sound virtual at all. BUY ONE OR BE SORRY ITS ONE OFTHE BEST SYNTH I HAVE AND I LOVE IT, BUY ONE BUY ONE BUY ONE. ANDERTONS WERE CHEAPEST IN UK AND EUROPE

Seems to be a great little synth. Seeing the numerous reviews on YouTube I wanted one. Money is a little tight due to my recent redundancy but needed to cheer myself up. When I found that the price had dropped so much I decided to grab one.

I bought it as its small and portable. Sounds good, build quality is good. It has a good bottom end. Pads are average. Lots of fun though.
