Product Description

When you say analogue synth, you say Sequential. Their latest creation is Take 5, a polyphonic analogue synthesiser that promises to be a staple for iconic sounds over the coming years.

An extremely powerful tool in your arsenal, the Take 5 is a 5-voice Poly Synth with 2 VCOs and a sub oscillator per voice, a classic 4-pole resonant analogue filter from the Prophet-5 rev 4 design, 44 full-size keys on a premium Fatar keybed. The synth's key-split feature allows you to divide the 3.5 octave keyboard into two different zones. To top it all off, you will have access to dual digital effects and FM synthesis, to experience all the nuances of Sequential power, from vintage to modern

All of Sequential in one Synth

The Take 5 was designed for all those who haven't had the chance to experience Sequential's analog legacy so far. It packs up many of the features that made Sequential a leader in the field, like Prophet-5 Rev 4 design's 4-pole filter, per-voice LFOs and a polyphonic 64 steps sequencer.

A Powerful Sound Engine

The Take 5 is based on 2 voltage-controlled oscillators that provide all traditional wave shapes like saw, sine and pulse wave that you can model and enrich with the additional FM engine. The iconic filter shapes the oscillator and sub oscillator sound in classic fashion, while the Drive control adds some fantastic grit to it. Sequential also added a Vintage knob that adds variation to the filter, oscillators and envelope behaviour from voice to voice.

Take 5 also includes two LFOs, one global and one per-voice, ADSR and delay envelopes, dual digital effects (a dedicated reverb and a suite of time-delay and other effects) a separate additional overdrive effect, and extensive modulation possibilities.

If this wasn't enough, you can also enjoy a 64-step sequencer and a multimode arpeggiator.

Fantastic synthesizer & a bit of a bargain I'd say especially once you update the software which doubles the number of patches to 256 presets + 256 user presets.

Totally in love with my Take 5! The perfect synth for my home studio.

Mr Paul Nicholls29th Aug 2023

I’m not sure why this synth flew under my radar for over a year. Perhaps it was the name, or perhaps I just wasn’t looking for another synth at the time. But I recently saw a YT video pondering why they aren’t more popular and, after investigating it more, decided to get one for myself. I’m really glad that I did! I’ve now had the Take 5 for a couple of months, so I feel that I can now give an opinion without still being in the ‘honeymoon’ period. I’m not going to go through all the features, as it’s kind of pointless. But I will mention some of the things that I like, and some things that I believe could be better. The audio quality seems more lo-fi than my PolyBrute, but there’s just something about the sound of this synth that I can’t seem to get enough of. A kind of character, I suppose. You can have all the features in the world, but if you don’t like the sound, then those features mean very little. I really like the filters on this machine. While there’s only one filter type, and no pole-variants, there’s a few things you can do to change their character. You can add filter drive to ‘smudge’ to the resonance into the rest of the sound. If you want the filters to sound a bit more aggressive, then you can use the mod-matrix to send the filter output back through itself and ‘dirty’ the sound up quite a bit (and that’s without using the two distortion features available elsewhere.) If you want to go the other way and emphasize the resonance more, then you can dial the oscillators down to less than half way. So there’s more versatility than might first appear. I’m surprised how much I like the effects as well. Again, they’re not as high-end sounding as the PolyBrute’s effects. But they really suit the overall character of the synth. On most synths, when I apply a phaser, the sound is completely transformed into an unmistakeable phaser sound. But on the Take 5 the effect can be very subtle, or not, depending on the settings. I’ve found that the flanger too can be very useful. There are other very usable effects, of course, but I’ve rarely found the above effects to be useful on other synths (the PolyBrute being a notable exception.) It’s also great that all the effect parameters (minus the on/off buttons) can be modulation destinations. So they really feel like a part of the sound palette! A useful feature when programming the Take 5 is that there’s a little dot that appears in program-number window when a parameter is returned to its original position for that patch. Nice touch. Ok, so what do I not like so much? I would like the LFO’s shape indicator LED’s to pulse along with the LFO cycle. That would give more feedback on which LFO is doing what. Maybe I’m a bit too used to how the PolyBrute does things, but It would also be nice if the mod-wheel position was saved along with the patch. And also the transpose setting. I find it can be a bit confusing the adjust either of these, and then select a new patch, and find that it doesn’t behave like I expect. Finally, one thing I would like to see would be for them to add some kind of glissando for the portamento. Or perhaps some kind of quantization feature would do the same (and more!) So... That’s about it.. I own quite a few synths, but, alongside my PolyBrute, the Take 5 is now my favourite synth. While they are very different sounding, I like them both equally. While I wouldn’t recommend that you rush out and buy any synth based on what a random person says. But I would definitely recommend that you go and check the Take 5 out.

Love this synth. Some might bemoan the small voice count compared to its more expansive siblings in the Sequential range, but I've found its got everything I need plus some brilliant additions (love the overdrive circuit and 'vintage' knob!) As I'm not a piano virtuoso and have limited space,I also prefer this scale length, form factor as opposed to a larger 61 key bed. My only niggles would be the slightly old fashioned and limited patch memory and interaction and also the build quality is a little 'plasticy' for my liking. (The well documented 'flex' if you apply just a little pressure to the top panel is a bit concerning.) Would have probably paid the extra for an 'SE' wood and metal version, like they did for the Pro 3, but I guess at that pricce it'd be in competition with other Polysynths from the range.

This synthesiser is precisely what I was looking for - a rich sound, intuitive, hands-on subtractive synthesis, all the I/O I need for either DAWless or DAW-supported creation, and at its core a massively fun instrument to make the music that suits me.

My first synth and it's taking some learning but it feels solid, sounds good, packed with features for a not-stupid price. The factory patches are great but there is a lot to learn to get the most out of it. It would be nice if it came with a hard copy manual rather than having to download a PDF.
