Product Description

Here's What Yamaha say:

Designed for performance, YC Stage Keyboards feature Virtual Circuitry Modelling (VCM) Organ technology with physical Drawbars, extensive real-time control, and authentic acoustic / electric piano and FM synth sound.

A musician with a strong affinity for the piano and/or even an appropriate education will appreciate the YC88’s “Natural Wood Graded Hammer” keyboard. In addition, the excellent tuning of the keyboard to the sound generation enables a dynamic that comes very close to playing on an acoustic piano.

Nevertheless, the YC88 offers all the important sounds from the immense range of the YC Series beyond the excellent classical pianos and e.pianos. For example, when playing an organ, a second keyboard can be integrated via MIDI - all other sounds can be controlled, too. Individual assignments for external keyboards can be saved for each individual Live Set.

Great layout, the three main parts - organ, piano and synth are separated into blocks and are editable in real time - what previous Yamaha stage pianos have lacked. The controls are intuitive and programming is easy. The key bed is excellent - feels like a piano, but the response when using the organ and synth is light enough for slick playing. The whole unit is compact and light enough to carry about. Why they put the mod and pitch levers so far away from the other controls is beyond me; they are quite difficult to reach when playing at the other end of the keyboard, but at least you have the option of assignable pedals. Initially I was disappointed with the preset patches, but after a few months playing, I've changed my mind. The organs are pretty good, with drawbar and drive controls normally missing from this kind of keyboard, and the Leslie sim is pretty good. There are drive and pre-drive pots, but what is missing is a Leslie growl sample. It would be nice to have that from time to time. Still, these organs are way better than what you get on the RD2000 for example, and easier to use than the Nord. A great feature is that your saved drawbar settings are lit up when you open a patch, regardless of where the physical drawbars are. Initially I thought the pianos we're a bit dull. A lot of rubbish custom ones and only a couple of useable ones. As this is the main point of the keyboard, I was a bit disappointed. But after a lot of playing I have figured out how to use the EQ, compressor and other effects to fine tune the pianos and now I have the killer piano sounds I was after. One of the piano settings (U1 I think) sounds great at the top end -very realistic - but there is a definite change in sound in the middle register and then the bottom half sounds a bit naff. And this is where I've noticed a oarticular problem that you don't get with the Roland RD2000 for example. The YC88 has three banks which can be used at the same time. One is devoted to the organs, so you end up with only two more patches left to make up your performance sound. If you've split the pianos up so that you have, say, a U1 piano for the top end and a CFX for the bottom end, then this uses up the bank you would normally have used for an electric piano, strings, or synth. So it's quite limiting. I'm used to synths like the CS6 and 2030 which have 8 patches per oerformance. Yamaha have had terrible pianos since the CP series took over from the P series. This keyboard has made a great improvement. What really sells it though is its useability. All of the controls are in front of you for real time editing. You don't have to go into a menu to change settings (except for advanced settings like pedal assign). If you want to alter FX, EQ, compression, tone, voice, amp sim, whatever, you can do it using the knobs and buttons on the top panel without a break in what you're playing. There are also 3 easy to hit retractive switches which will turn each bank off. So you can be playing piano, hit the organ switch with the back of your hand, and you have organ, immediately. Pedals can also be assigned as volume, expression, on/off. The electric pianos are excellent and easy to edit. They just sound superb. The synth and strings sets are... well pretty laughable. None of the powerful layered sounds from the CS6 and you can get much better strings from Roland. Overall it's a great instrument but missed an opportunity to be amazing. Still, seems a better purchase than any of the Nords or the Roland RD series. I'll see what the upgrades bring.

Awesome stage keyboard! Went for the YC88 at the last minute as opposed to the YC73 which I had planned to get. Pleased that I did as the keybed is perfect for me, as playing mainly piano rather than organ - feels amazing. Sounds are very authentic, the organ is particularly stunning. Looking forward to trying the clever iPad link where you can play a synth app etc via the keyboard and it comes back via the YC, or even linking up another midi keyboard with a waterfall keybed for those organ solos. Chose the YC after watching a few of the exceptional Andertons video presentations where I was seriously thinking about the Korg SV2. Pleased with my choice - no regrets, not looking for anything else - it’s a keeper.
