G&L is the final legacy of legendary guitar builder Leo Fender. Creator of so many iconic instruments, Leo continued to re-work these designs when he founded G&L in 1979.
The Comanche is Leo’s final evolution of the classic S-type guitar that he originated and features improved tone controls and vibrato bridge, as well as radically re-designed pickups for a more powerful, modern tone.
Body and Neck
This guitar features a mahogany body which is known for its sustain and has the added effect of adding a warmer tone and mellowing effect to the quite powerful pickups.
The Comanche has a comfortable “Medium C” neck profile which is easy to play and has a 12” fingerboard radius. This radius is more modern than traditional S-type guitars and is comfortable to fret chords on and is far more suited to playing leads and bends than the more curved, vintage radius fingerboards.
Electronics and Hardware
You might be looking at this guitar and wondering what on earth those pickups are? Well, these are Leo Fender-designed Magnetic Field Design Z-Coils. Because of the Z-shape of these pickups, they emphasise the bass of your lower strings and the high-ends of your higher strings which results in a punchy, well-balanced, modern sound.
These pickups have all the articulation and brightness you’d expect in a single-coil but with the added benefit of being hum-cancelling!
The Leo Fender-designed Passive Treble Bass system adds greater functionality and flexibility to the tone controls allowing you to shape the bass and treble with more precision.
Another innovation on this guitar is the Dual-Fulcrum vibrato bridge (also designed by Leo!) that allows you to easily bend up or down and greater tuning stability than its vintage counterparts.
Here's What G&L Say About the Tribute Comanche:
The G&L Comanche® is Leo’s final word on the traditional double-cutaway bolt-on axe. Fact is, the first thing you’ll notice about the Comanche is the distinctive shape of the Magnetic Field Design™ Z-Coil™ pickups designed by Leo Fender himself. These pickups deliver a bright and sparkly top end while offering a robust bottom end, all without any 60-cycle hum.
You’ll find plenty of power in the Z-coil pickups, but what’s surprising is how glassy and detailed they become as you roll back the volume and bass controls, the latter a part of the Comanche’s PTB™ (Passive Treble and Bass) system. What’s more, the Tribute® Series Comanche includes an expander switch on the treble pot to allow neck+bridge or all three pickups together. In a pinch, the neck+bridge combo does a convincing faux ASAT® Special. Talk about versatile!
The new G&L Tribute Series Comanche features one of Leo’s favorite pairings: the power of MFD pickups mellowed by the high porosity of a Mahogany body. Making the most of this delicious combo is Leo’s Dual-Fulcrum vibrato, a work of engineering art which allows bending up or down with unsurpassed stability, while offering a silky feel through its beefy aluminum vibrato arm.
The Comanche was the very last double-cutaway bolt-on guitar designed by Leo Fender, the culmination of everything he had learned during his amazing lifetime. And now, it’s available at a price within reach of every working musician. Once you play a G&L Tribute Series, you’ll never look back.
