Browne Amplification's 'The Protein' pedal is a versatile 2-in-1 overdrive that combines two classic gain circuits. Made collaboratively between David Brown and guitarist/producer Adam Sniegowski, The Protein was designed to eliminate a common problem faced by touring musicians often paired with sub-par and inconsistent-sounding backline amps.

Adam came to Dave with the ambition of creating a dual overdrive that would sound brilliant with any amplifier he encountered. They started with two drives that they both loved and that, as it so happened, stacked well together too! But a few inherent issues cropped up, which Dave set out to fix without losing the sonic soul of the original circuits.

2 Overdrives in One Pedal

Blue Side - The Protein's 'blue side' is based on a modern classic OD, used by countless guitar players worldwide but perhaps most famously by John Mayer on his  “Continuum” album. Dave addressed issues like the lack of output, while also tweaking the tone control and experimenting with components in order to find his favourite version of this much-adored circuit.

Green Side - Browne Amplification's The Protein isn't a one-trick pony, with its 'green side' inspired by the classic “Nashville” overdrive. This pedal has been a popular weapon of choice among session stars, including the likes of  Tim Pierce and Jerry McPherson. David Brown customised this circuit to perfection, by lowering the amount of distortion and thus making its gain control usable through the entire sweep. Brown also added some extra mid-range to prevent it from sounding so scooped, while eliminating some of the woolly low-end too.

How Do They Sound Together?

If you really want to take things up a notch, The Protein's secret “third” channel allows you to run its green side into the blue side. Doing this gives you added gain and saturation without sacrificing note clarity or causing "muddiness". Altogether, this means that Browne Amplification's The Protein is a compact stompbox that can offer 3 distinctive overdrive flavours. Make it the gain centrepiece for your pedalboard!
