The Tone City Golden Plexi is a medium-high gain circuit housed in a robust metal enclosure. It’s quite sensitive to small changes in turning the knob and is quite trebly. I’m gain-stacking this pedal after a fuzz and a mild overdrive and I’ve have both the EQ and gain at 9 o’clock. Like this it works really well and allows me to shape my tone and gain as desired with the three pedals - just what I ordered it for. I’m sure the pedal will last a long time and I’m pleased with Anderton’s service.

Love this pedal, again this is the second one I've bought (to go on my back-up pedal-board).
It's a bit of a "one sound" pedal, the gain knob makes very little difference between 7 o'clock and 9 o'clock, and pretty much no difference at all for the rest of the range!! But if you like the sound it makes - and I do! - then that's enough, it's not like I'm going to be bending down and fiddling with setting mid-gig. The tone knob works fine, it never really gets either 'muddy' or 'shrill' but does make a significant difference. Vol does as it should.

Love the sound of this pedal plus it’s budget friendly. Although it can be too distorted when the gain is past 11 for my ears. Also I hear noises when I turn the gain up not sure if it’s the pedal or the fact that I have single coil pickups.

Love the tone! Awesome for an 80s hard rock tone. Only reason I didn’t give 5 stars is due to the fact that the gain control does...well nothing. You have gain...or nothing. However, though it isn’t very versatile, it is absolutely amazing! Good price too if you’re on a budget.

Does exactly what it is supposed to do. I use it with low gain but this is a great pedal to boost your signal and add just a tad of gain. To fully take advantage of this little monster, put another distortion or low gain overdrive in your signal chain to obtain a quasi-fuzz muffed sound!

Not very happy with this one. Too gainy - almost unusable on its own while gain knob does not have much effect on tone. The only usage I have for it is by stacking Tube Screamer into Golden Plexi and then into Sweet Cream. Decent distortion sound, but still hard to tweak it to my taste further on.

Does what it says on the tin. I fed this into the clean channel of my Marshall Valve 50 and it provides that rich overdriven marshall plexi sound at around a third of the cost of other similar pedals. If you want to mess about with treble middle and bass controls or have a greater sweep of gain, this may not be the pedal for you. If you want to stand on a pedal and have the overdriven sound of a plexii, then do not dismiss it and save some pennies.

Good pedal. Can’t do all the plexi sounds but does hi gain very well. If there is a criticism its that the pedal is either on or off. The gain does not come on gradually. I didn’t buy it for clean sounds and crunch as I already have that.

This pedal blew my mind in store, just the amount of distortion is superb and for the price!!!! How could I say no!!!!! This pedal is well made and sounds great, I did however end up returning it. Rob Chapman is right when he says that the Gain knob is fictional. At 0 the pedal doesn't drive/distort the signal but between 1 and MAX there really is no distinction that I could notice, this makes the pedal very inflexible and a one trick pony, a trick it does well but not want I'd hoped for. As a result I sent the pedal back and got the Wild Fire by Tone City instead.

I'm running it in front of digital amp set to clean and it's doing a passable imitation of a famous British brand of amp whose name begins with M. And it's well built too.

I saw the Tone City video reviews and was sceptical that they could be such good value for money. Best Plexi Simulation i ever heard, way better than all digital sims (Plugins/Line6 Amps/Pod), no real clean setting, always crunchy/distorted, but the distortion is very tight, clear, bright on the top, thick at the bottom, just as a Plexi should be. The most touch sensitive/detailed distortion pedal I ever used. If you're lookin for that transparent "Brown" Plexi sound from Van Halen's 1st album where you can still here the sound of your guitar/string through all that distortion, try this one. Distorted but no mush, precise attack and crispy harmonic distortion in the high frequencies

lus it comes with 2 different self adhesive backings (one velcro, one for floor use).That was a nice little bonus, haven't seen many companies do that.
Tonewise i found that there was just too much gain.Even with the gain dial at 9oclock, on my Marshall VS100 clean channel, I had to keep the volume at 120clock max to not have screaming feedback.

Bit to harsh for my liking, guitar output makes all the difference to this pedal as it seems to like a lower volume push. Not very usable to me but tested through my mates rig (Telecaster and fender amp) and it was a monster tone !!! Gave it to him for Xmas!!! Well built little pedal but try with your set up first.

Very good overdrive /distortion. Sounds like a Jcm 800 in a pedal. Sooooo good and a must buy at £40. I love it.

Excellent value for money.. Great overdriven tone as a stand alone pedal and makes for a nice booster as well.. Build quality seems pretty sound and feels sturdy with a confident sounding switch.. Very happy with it.
