Product Description

Here's what Electro Harmonix says about Attack Decay:

The circa-1980 Electro-Harmonix Attack Decay is a sought after prize among vintage pedal aficionados. Originally called a Tape Reverse Simulator, it’s known for producing volume and reverse swells, backward tape sounds, artificially short staccato notes and bowed instrument effects. The new Attack Decay reinterprets the classic and keeps its cool factor, but adds some modern features for convenience and enhanced functionality.

It can produce a single volume envelope like the original, or, with Poly engaged, put separate volume envelopes on each note you play. The built-in Harmonix fuzz is now a fully controllable distortion with gain, tone and volume controls. The effects loop allows the musician or sound designer to place the volume envelope onto whatever signal is present at the Return jack. Expression pedal/CV input and three user presets give the user total control over their Attack Decay!

Specfications

  • Volume envelope manipulation with adjustable Attack and Decay times.
  • Mono mode: one volume envelope at a time, the envelope resets when you play a new note.
  • Poly mode: gives each note you play its own envelope.
  • Built-in, fully adjustable, Harmonix fuzz enhances the volume envelope effect and produces bowed instrument sounds.
  • Built-in effects loop allows for your own pedals to be inserted onto the volume envelope.
  • Expression pedal or CV control over every knob on the Attack Decay.
  • Save and recall up to three presets.
  • EHX 9.6VDC-200mA power supply included
  • Current Draw: 150mA @ 9VDC
  • Dimensions in inches: 4.0(w) x 4.75(l) x 2.25(h)

An excellent experimental effect from EHX, takes a bit of getting used to but tracks well with a wide range of effects options.

I've been playing with reverse delays over the years hooked up to reverb pedals and have owned a Digitech XP-1000 which had an XP-200 patch, plus a TC Crescendo. I love that swell sound however I hadn't settled on any of them. This pedal has stuck though. It's pretty much perfect, you can dial in beautiful swells and go deeper with modulation and delay in the loop. I'm still finding things to do with it, I love it! I was worried that it might end up being another expensive pedal that sat on the board for specific use every once in a while but I use it way more than I thought I would. Very easy to use once you've sussed the layout, sounds incredible and is way more versatile and useful than I thought it could be. Plus an awesome fuzz. It's super solid in construction and awesome for the price. Very heavily recommended.

It applies an attack & decay envelope which can be adjusted from instant to very slow, there is a built in fuzz (adjustable), it detects a note very cleanly & you can save 3 presets. It is not a "must have" effect but if you need violin or cello like sounds or something that sounds backwards (though it's not) this will do the job nicely.

I failed to buy a Boss Slow Gear when they were available, but this EH Attack Decay does much more. My current favourite is an s-curve attack with straight line decay. Comes with its own power supply - that's a plus in my book - but will work with others that meet the power requirement. Downsides: combinations of buttons to get at various features means you don't want to lose the instruction manual (although it's also available on the EH website), and the "Harmonix" drive/fuzz can get outrageous.
