The Fender Custom Shop have let us get our hands dirty and have a go at designing our own little series of guitars using their Custom Shop spec sheet. We all have a couple of famous strats in our head played by legendary guitarists and the Artist Inspired range is our take on some of the world's most iconic guitars. These are not official signature models just our interpretations of some of the best guitars we have ever seen.
The Sunburst '57
Like a few of the guitars in our inspired by range finding the right year to base the guitar on can be difficult. In the case of this guitar it is becuase the original was made using parts from multiple '56 and '57 guitars to make the best '50s strat possible. Finished in 2 Tone Sunburst and given a sweet Journeyman finish for a slightly worn look this is a realy beauty to look at and play.
The body is made out of select lightweight Ash while the neck is all plain Maple. The entire thing is then given a spray of Nitro Lacquer like was used back in the 50's that gives the guitar protection from small knocks and dents without having a negative effect on the sound. The neck carve might come as a slight surprise to those that have already worked out the original guitar we have based this on. The neck is a Mid 60's Oval "C" pattern, partially because certain models like it have this neck profile and partly to give it a slightly more worn in V feel.
Electronics and Pickups
This is where we get some really cool hardware in this guitar. The pickups are all Fender's own Custom Shop designs perfectly calculated to get you the best 50's/60's sound possible. We did not just leave it there though, on this guitar you also have the amazing Clapton Mid Boost circuit. This as the name suggests boosts up the midrange giving you a higher output sound with a bit more chunk, something nearing that P90 sound.
Before Fender introduced their Journeyman relic you had the choice of New Old Stock (Fresh out of the factory), Closet Classic (aged but not worn) or their standard Relics, which even when done lightly still looked quite battered. Now the Journeyman finds a nice spot in-between Relic and Closet Classic. A good amount of ageing with some small marks and dings to show it has been played give this guitar a great bit of character.
