PRS’ reputation has always been impeccable. Since 1985, they have produced high-quality instruments that have been played by countless artists of all different styles. Combining beauty with functionality, their guitars are renowned for their looks, tones, and playability. Every time you pick up a PRS, you will feel inspired.
The Custom 22 is a classic design, with its elegant double-cutaway body, set-neck construction and high-grade electronics and hardware. This model sports dual 85/15 humbuckers, allowing to achieve a range of sounds, making this a versatile guitar ideal onstage or in the studio.
2 Frets Less, More Tones:
Taking away 2 frets may not seem like a big deal, however for a dual humbucker guitar it completely affects the tone of the instrument – in a good way!
As the rosewood fretboard is slightly shorter, to maintain the same scale length and tension you need to move the bridge further back. This therefore widens the gap between the neck and bridge pickups, and while the bridge pickup will still sound the same and have plenty of bite, the neck pickup will produce a warmer tone as it is close to the centre of the guitar’s scale length.
The Custom 22 therefore offers you a greater variety of sounds over the Custom 24, and you can play blues and jazz styles with a more convincing tone thanks to the neck pickup’s darker sound. 22 frets also provides a more classic look, if that’s what you’re into.
Made In Maryland:
Like all USA PRS guitars, this has been made in their Maryland factory. During the building process, they mix the wisdom and skills of their traditional luthiers with the consistency of machines, to make a guitar to the highest quality every time while still keeping that personal hand-made touch.
With a mahogany body and neck, topped with a beautiful figured maple top, this guitar has a balanced sound with a focused midrange that cuts through the mix.
The Neck on this guitar has been cut to the “Pattern Regular” profile. Designed to be thin enough for shredders to enjoy while still being rounded enough for rhythm players to get around, this neck profile is one of the most popular for more modern players and old-school purists alike.
In recent years, PRS have started creating a wider range of pickups all based on vintage style PAFs but with modern twists to make them more suitable for the modern guitarist. These are the 85/15 pickups, that focus on providing the best sound for the modern guitarist. When compared to other pickups like the 58/08s and 59/09s, these pickups have impeccable clarity with extended high and low end to make sure you can get the tone you want every time you plug it in.
Second To None Hardware:
Not many companies can say that they have spent so long getting their hardware just perfect. PRS are one of the few that can. The PRS Gen III Tremolo and Phase III Locking tuners work together to keep the guitar in tune no matter how extreme you play. Even if you go full on Hendrix, this guitar will still stand its ground.
Here's what PRS say about the Custom 22McCarty in Faded Whale Blue:
The Custom 22 is a classic workhorse with all the tones you’ve come to expect from your PRS with a distinctive midrange and clarity thanks, in part, to its 85/15 pickups. These pickups are wired for our 5-way blade switch, which offers a dual humbucker option (see switching positions below). The Custom 22 also features a PRS patented Gen III trem and comfortable solid mahogany pattern neck.
